Silver and Steel

Ha! Looks like I could even curl-only!

Quick review of this morning - I tried some “athletic” style leg training I saw on a YouTube video (Fitness Culture - their instructionals are actually pretty good). Anyway, I was trying to be true to it and do all the stuff they recommended. The damn warmup was like 20 minutes long. By the time I got to the squats, I legit didn’t care anymore. I even like squatting. I’m 41 and don’t need all this nonsense (and am, in fact, turned off by it)… who is this for??

I think that’s all my complaining for today, but I stand by: nobody needs to warm up for more than 5 minutes in most cases. Maybe 10 if you’ve been on a plane for 2 days or you’re in your Nebraska garage in January. Even then, is there not something useful you could do that’s also warming you up? Like maybe superset some accessory work with light work sets and jumps? Perhaps work up from front squats to box squats to squats? At least do something. I dunno, maybe personal bias.

Off to save the day!

I’m not sure I’ve ever been turned on or turned off by a warmup but we apparently have different experiences there.

Agree with the sentiment though. Did deadlifts this morning, was stiff as shit, so I did some with the bar, did some kettlebell swings, but 135 on, did some shoulder work, out 225 on, etc. probably got to my top single within 10 minutes of getting into the gym and I had to sit down for a breather after hitting a double.

It’s definitely my fault for going through something I didn’t need to “stick to it.” I tend to lean the way you did - do what you need when you need it; no two days will look the same. You were still doing stuff that “mattered” too; I get annoyed with the generic skip around and do these hip circles stuff that I would just never do. On the other hand… that’s on me! I just shouldn’t do it.

Fair point. I did my “big” transformation a few years ago and I was freaking dialed in. I’m seriously not whining or like “out of it” right now; I just don’t have a singular goal I’m hardcore chasing.

On the work front, I just had a big conversation that meant a lot to me. It’s not yet announced, so I hesitate to even say anything (but nobody knows me on here so whatever), but a lot of years are about to come to fruition - I’m in a pretty good mood.

I did a full arm workout today for @simo74. I really haven’t been doing frequent arm days lately, and I was feeling puny. Getting back on that horse!

To warm up, I coached my early birds. Walking around and watching other people work counts.

  1. First superset was 4 rounds of 8 DB Curls and 10 rope pressdowns
  2. Second superset was 4 rounds of 10 hammer curls and 10 cable kickbacks (these were kind of awesome).
  3. Third superset was 4 rounds of 10 EZ curls and 10 EZ skullcrushers.
  4. Then I did 4 sets of calves and went to drink coffee… heroically.

No there is a proper workout. It was like reading an old flex article with Eddie Robinson or Craig Titus in it. I am now picturing you on either denim shorts or baggy gym pants.

Two drastically different implications

Well now I have to fill out some denim shorts

Today was a pull day.

I started with 10 minutes on the elliptical, as is my way

  1. Supinated Pulldowns
Did these one arm at a time on the machine that has two handles, so I held one arm in a stretch and the other was working, then switched. Kinda cool.
    4 x 8

  2. Rack Pulls
I actually put the pins a little higher than I normally do, which was tougher than me. What you want to do is lift with your back in a twisting jerking motion; take your legs totally out of the equation. I was able to really contract my lats here.
I worked up and did 3 sets of 315/6, then 365/6 on the last one. Not death sets, because I forgot my straps and grip became a factor.

  3. Assisted Chins
    Just 4 x 8 here

  4. Straight-arm Pulldown
Here I’m getting my torso probably 45-degrees to the floor and getting a long line of pull on the cable; I set the pin so it starts from a height just above my head.
    4 x 10 or so here

  5. Seated EZ Curl
This was a little weird, but great contraction at the top. Just sit down and curl an EZ bar from your lap.
    4 x 15ish

  6. EZ Preacher Curl
    Normal stuff
    4 x 8

  7. Decline Sit-up
    3 x 10 - I got an ab cramp!

The only thing @TrainForPain does in the squat rack is bicep curls!

I’m pretty sure if you keep posting here, HR is going to have questions for me.

LOL its funny how we say that now. But looking back I spent my late teen years buying flex, ironman, muscle and fitness magazines and they were full of shots just like this. It wasn’t odd or something HR needed to worry about back then. But it was also a time when you could look at page 3 of the daily newspaper and see a fresh pair of tits every day. Times have changed.

Ha! Same. I think my mom was ready to have different conversations with me.
I remember going to England when I was in the army and seeing boobs in the papers - that was weird for a young American.

That was the best part of my week. I would go to visit my grandparents and my grandad would keep the whole weeks papers so I could look at the page 3.

Holy crap @atlas13 what is going on with your new recruiting campaign? Very on-brand. Obviously, I’ve won every rivalry argument for the rest of time.
