Screw the Bench Press

I agree, bench press sucks. If you don’t like it, then don’t do it unless you are training for a meet.

And for the “blah blah this is the powerlifting forum!!! blah blah” crowd…believe it or not, but not everyone who likes powerlifting competes, so you don’t have to stick to the competition lifts. Shocking, I know.:)
derez, is that you?

If you suck as benching due to leverages that doesn’t make it stupid. If a guy has shitty deadlift mechanics that doesn’t make the deadlift suck. It just means he needs to work harder to make up for his weakness’.

Interesting. Aside from squat, bench, DL and the occasional strict curl, what other lifts consistitute powerlifting?

This is a quality thread. Good job OP.

I’ve never created a thread that has generated such a response. Maybe I should behave like a Troll (is that the correct term?) a bit more often?

Power shurgs and 4-way neck for a 7 rep max.

7 Rep Max on the 4-way Neck Machine? And all of this time I have been training for a 15 rep max. FML

I bench 110kg touch and go. I weigh 130-140kg. Ive been made to feel inadequate for years because of my shitty bench. I play american football with loads of guys benching 140-160 kg. I push them all round the football field. I bet I could do the same to all the benchers at my gym. I don’t even know how to play american football (Im English and have been playing 2 months). Fuck the bench press.
Waaaaaaa!

You sound like a girl with tits the size of rasins bitching about girls with nice racks.

one of my strongest lifts, but wish i could trade it for more deadlift/squat poundages.

I´m a pretty tall guy (6,4) and i got really really long arms (former swimmer and climber, now all rowing).
Just adapt, i have made the bench one of my strongest lifts, just pound the shit out of yourself until it works.
My weakness is squats, but just gotta work that one too.

I always hear people at the gym complain about their bench, but they are also the most undisciplined and impatient when it comes to training the bench press. At 200 lbs., my 1-rep max is currently 335 (yes, at a sanctioned meet).

I train within my range, and probably get about 5 lbs. stronger every 3 months. I do 5x5, 4x4, 3x3, 5x3, etc. changing from week to week, and I use a lot of 2.5 lb. plates. I never see the guys who are complaining do some odd # like 260 for 3 sets of 5. I do see them with 315 stuck on their chest quite often though. It has been many months since I’ve failed to bench my target numbers. Failing is hard on the shoulders too. I see people who spend more time failing than succeeding, because their ego won’t let them train within their range.

Benching is very precise. It’s not like deadlifting where on a good day you can suddenly lift 10-15 lb.s more. It’s good to have one of those charts, so you can see what equals what. For example, yesterday I lifted 255 for 3 sets of 8, which according to my chart is 323.6. I could have done a 9th rep on my first set which would equal 331.5, but then I would’ve been too burnt out to do 2 more sets of 8. Discipline, discpline, and more discipline.

And then there’s speed work, boards, but what use is any of that if your bench program sucks to begin with. I see guys doing speed work who I’m sure could easily make gains just doing regular working sets like I do, but they see the elite lifters using chains, bands and boards, and think they should too.

Nothing absurd about it.

His spell-checker messed up and auto corrected whore to door.

So replace door with whore and it makes perfect sense.

Your op didn’t really ask any specific q’s about benching so I’m not surprised you didn’t learn anything.
Except maybe you should bench more and post less.
Just sayin’…

I tried to do my second session that included bench in like 5 years today, and was immediately confronted with one of the additional reasons I dropped it -

I had to compete with the “curl bros” who were doing about 1 set (of bench press, at least) every 5 mins among about 7 bros on the flat bench. Ive been using it accessory-style, so I settled for decline. I really should not have switched my DL session to upper body push on a Monday of all days!

If you work out in a commercial gym, you have some idea how nice it is to be liberated from this BS.
