Phenom at what? Because he doesn’t compete in raw full back squat you know.

You aren’t the only one who notices. The funny part is that, while no one really attributed his ability to teh roidz, several people tried to dismiss them as a non-factor.
I’ve tried to fight that fight on several threads. If someone makes some baseless conjecture about steroids being the reason for something, a million people will flame them. However, if someone makes some baseless conjecture about steroids NOT being the reason for something, they get a free pass.
It has become dogma on this site as an overreaction to the anti-steroid of the idiotic public world.
But the kid is awesome, can’t wait to see how far he goes. I even thought he handled himself decently in that interview for being an un-coached 20 year old.

Yeah, but you did get one hell of a DL didn’t you? ;0)
but I have to disagree with yall. By the same token, there are no genetics or training or diet that will make a person that strong. It doesn’t make them non-factors in what he is.
There are a lot of people who could say, “I trained like him for 20 years and never got that strong”, so the kids hard work didn’t make him what he is, right?
EVERYTHING he does makes him what he is. Training, Genes, Food, supplements, and (if he does them) drugs.
I have not been flamed in a long time…so here it goes…
this is what real lifting is supposed to be about. kid with no equipment, no mono-lift, no box, no chains, bands, and no 15 people around him helping him get his gear on and spotting/running the mono-lift. in a pair of sweaty gym shorts and a t-shirt, in the back corner of a small cluttered garage gym, just walks up to a bar loaded with lots of weight and lifts it.
you don’t need all that shit to lift and be strong. get a squat racks , a good barbell and some plates, clean out a spot in your garage and start rowing, pressing, squatting and deadlifting. you will get bigger and stronger.

620 raw and 665 equipped sumo? i would not consider that “one hell of a deadlift” but thanks!
serious, i appreciate that but my pull numbers are average at best for somebody seriously strength training for as long as i have.
you are right, and wrong. if he does use, it has helped him, but he would still be stronger than me…and some people can get inhumanely strong without drugs.
I’ve been training for 10.5 year. Natural all the way, and I’ve done an all time no-belt ATG squat of 250kg/550lbs. Actually I did it the day after Mendez 363kg squat. I’d been hunting that number for a while, and I was very close, as close as you can come without making it, and that fucking incredible lift inspired the hell out of me, so on an not optimum day, I decided just to go for it and do it. I have no need to brag further and post a video here. It would be a shame to try to put me in the same divison as the men who has had their videos posted in this thread.
Steroids will make you become physcially stronger, but steroids cannot help you with mental toughness. When you come to a certain point, further advancement is mostly due to you being a bloody tough bastard. Of course, if you are a bloody though bastard AND you use steroids, you will become inhuman strong. Any pussy can take steroids and become big and strong, but to become really strong, steroids are simply not enough.
If you want to have a look at some though bastards that I do believe to be natural, look up these people:
Blenderate (Andy Ruse(?) search that name on youtube 305kg raw 1rm squat)
Power275 (Mike Tuscherer, search that name on youtube 350+kg raw 1rm squat)
Tmodi (Search that name on youtube, Modi here on T-Nation 270kg+ raw 1rm squat)
Holymoly (Search holymoly +squat on youtube, he’s got a 300kg raw 1rm squat at 22 years old)
There are also some more strong lifters (squatters) on youtube, but I am not so sure about their
status in regards to steroids. And of course there will be many lifters I do not know about.
On a world basis, many natural weightlifters and powerlifters will have a 300kg+ squat, and
that is a very advanced level. Once you get up to 350kg+ 1rm squat, the number of people that
can do this decrease dramatically. Usually people that have this kind of strength have worked
out for many many years, unless they are on steroids. But some of them just have more talent
than others. Imagine if you go to your first workout as a teenager and you can do a 330lbs ATG
squat on your first try, then you have got some real talent.
I am not saying Mendez is clean, or that he is on. It is not my role to speculate.
But when I see someone do a 363kg ATG no-belt-walked out-walked in-no spotter squat, then I become inspired. Very much so. That’s a squat. Hats down. It’s not multiply, it’s no quarter depth, it’s no monolift. It’s a fucking SQUAT!
No matter what flows through his blood, if it is a normal level of testesterone or an elevated level, we can all learn something from his dedication and thoughnes. Steroids or not, these guys are tough. They are no whimps, but a shitload of people are, and they will never get STRONG!

i am printing this so i can read it in the mornings when i wake up.
awesome post stallion.
i will agree with much of your post Stallion.
when I trained at Diablo barbell in concord…everyone there said i had a 700 plus squat in me. They trained old school westside barbell style with speed days and dynamic days, and on the dynamic days i was keeping up with guys squatting 700-800lbs in competition, but on max effort days i would crumble. i feel some of this was due to my genetics, ie naturally explosive but not very good attachments and often injured. but many of the guys there thought it was mental, i earned the nickname “head-case”. looking back, maybe they were right, perhaps i was just not mentally tough enough to challenge myself under the really big weights.

I vent here simply because I showed the Andy Bolton video to some co-workers and got the ‘it’s all steroidz’ argument. I don’t use teh roidz. But I don’t use that as an excuse to be weak. And I know that even if I used a shitload of gear, I would still be unlikely to squat or deadlift 1000lbs. Do teh roidz help? Of course they do. Otherwise people wouldn’t use them. If Mendes uses gear, it still can’t account for an 800lbs squat at 20 or 21 years old. That is (as someone else has already noted) genetics, hard training and good eating. And maybe gear.
It just pisses me off when someone achieves a great feat of strength and I hear “heez on teh roidz brah”. Even if it isn’t on this board, it’s a frequent comment out here in the real world.

What I heard was that Krastev was rumored to have done it for 10 in training, about the time he set the WR snatch. This is a bit unbelievable to me. Has anyone else heard anything similar?
Krastev was Broz’s coach and if this is true I guess the goal is for the student to surpass the master of the master
I shouldn’t have mentioned the steroid thing before as it lead to a bit of thread derailing and I apologize.
Still USAW should start kissing some ass or else they will lose a potential gold medal athlete. I really would like to see the US start to win some gold medals in weightlifting in my lifetime.

this might be beneficial.
Yes, I’ve been working at a total of 4 different gyms for a total time of 7 years.
I still stand by my statement: “Any pussy can get strong and big by using steroids.”
I have seen many of these pussies around, and I smell a shitload of them on this board too! ![]()
Trying to offend me is fine, at some point I became a mature adult and stopped caring about what
people think of me. ![]()
So for anyone who will listen, I tell them that natural lifting is the only way, and anyone who
disagree with this, well do your thing, but be prepared the day it does catch up to you, because
at some point it will, one way or another way.
Oh, as a side note, the reason many people prefer to bench press over squats and deadlifts are because
bench press is easy to do. Squats are hard and so is deadlifts. Go to any gym in any country, and
you will see a lot of big motherfuckers doing their incline dumbell presses, their lat pulldowns
or their precher curls.
Real men squat and deadlift.
But some are content being douchebags. And again, I smell a shitload of those on this board. ![]()
