Had our second annual "Young Guns Invitational’ at our club (Pittsburgh Barbell Club). We had a ‘B’ session for our club members.

I hit hit 85/89x/89x (missed a 1kg PR twice) and 112 (SOLID) then missed the jerks on 116 twice (I believe this was due to strength loss due to weight cut - 104.7)

Our ‘A’ men’s session featured:

Mike Nackoul with a 323 total (struggled w/his snatches- 138x/138/143x) and crushed his cnj- 3/3: 175/180/185!
Kevin Cornell (coming home) was, in my opinion, the best lifter of the day. He went 3/3 on his snatch w/a BIG 153 PR! 142/150/153 then missed 180, bumped to 190 and didn’t step through the jerk but came back with a vengeance a CRUSHED the 190 jerk for a 343 total (albeit as a 105).
Donovan Ford (glad to see him healthy) hit 160 and 200. He cleaned but did not jerk 205.
Michael Kreatsoulas hit 1454 on the snatch again (missed 150) but struggled missing the clean on 170 then missing the jerk then on his third attempt making a great accounting for himself made it. I see him being over 180 soon.
Mike Cerbus went 6/6.

Zygmunt Smalcerz came in to coach Mike and Donovan and did a ‘jerk’ lecture and clinic. Wow are we fortunate to have Regis Becker to coach and lead our club and host such a GREAT day of lifting.

I will post links to any video if and when I get any.

Sounds like a great day!

NewWorldMan, that sounds like it was pretty awesome.

Here’s what I did today:

Squat is doing pretty well at the moment. I’ve started deadlifting again also and that is doing well too. Everything else is just kind of hanging around for the most part.

I am back from vacation and time off for hip issues and totally weak from not training. I am thinking of doing a strength program like Texas method for squats, presses and deadlifts just because I am so weak right now just to get it back.

Abs are overrated.

I agree they don’t do much, but neither does having 20% body fat lol.

I’m sure my bf% was about 17-18% when I could hit 191 and 181x3…

Koing I know you’re not going to argue that fat helps you lift weight haha.

Kevin Cornell’s 153/190 from this weekend:

Increased size does help you lift more.

There is a reason why most 85 and definitely 94+ onwards are not as lean as the smaller guys. It is just a lot harder to be as lean as you get bigger in our sport.

The increased size helps them lift more because they are carrying more muscle along with the extra fat. But there’s no sense in them trying to force their bodies to become leaner because they might lose muscle and strength in the process.

A 56 kilo lifter on the other hand can’t afford to be 15% bf. He would automatically be handicapping his potential.

When I go up to 75kg class I’ll be happy to give up abs  At 63 it just makes me soft :stuck_out_tongue:

ape, my hips are still a work in progress…today my pt got me to do 10 rep front squats with 125lbs to try to identify any issues. I wasn’t expecting that! I actually did pretty could considering how weak I’ve been. 125lbs isn’t that heavy for me usually but lately it is.

She saw that I revert to quite an arch in my lower back when I get tired just below parallel on my way up. I have a lot of trouble keeping a neutral pelvis, at any time but she doesn’t see any strength issues so think thinks it’s just bad habits. When squatting she’s not sure and wants me to meet with her colleague who is going to take a look or go see one of the coaches at the throw centre.

btw I <3 Kevin Cornell. I met him when I went to California and he is such a nice guy.
