Is it possible to get big legs without squatting?

5 08…built to squat but found much more growth success with leg presses and Pendulums. Was doing 405 to the basement for 6 and had good size but really started gaining when I was able to get better knee flexion with different exercises

Got 315 on front squat for 6 once

Not a squatting judge and definitley not criticizing the squat

but would that be considered a succesful rep in a squatting meet?

A lot of squats in comps look that way, I would say his hip crease was borderline but it would probably get white lights in most feds.

This is him in 1985 at 23 yrs. old. One of his logs says he was squatting 410 lbs.

It’s not shot from an angle where it would get judged. He was able to do more and get whites in a meet: this was just the shortest video for me to link.

my record at 25 years old, 35 years ago was 465 for 5, then the back injury happened

It was from the front, so it is hard to tell

Yep from memory he stopped squatting after 1986 when he had an injury. Already had a great set of wheels by then though.

Now that’s impressive! I did 455 for 2 raw on a chair so just above parallel. I’ll never squat again unless I start incorporating Zerchers back in for some grappling strength

when i think of squats…first person that comes to mind is Platz…the guy is a squatting legend in his own stratosphere

What’s funny is, everyone focuses on depth, when ROM is what they really mean to focus on. When you slide your hips back like a powerlifting style squat, you can get less depth than a knees forward high bar olympic squat while still achieving the same amount of distance traveled. It’s a question of goals.

It is almost impossible to judge squat depth from the front. The front judge can white light a high squat, but the side judges can clearly see the depth. They many times get their head as low as the hips of the squatter.

My best guess was the 925lb squat would get 3 white lights in most meets.

And sometimes it is a question of injuries. I needed to never get my knees over my toes. My patella tendons could not endure that movement very many day at all. I had to squat like a powerlifter to accomplish any reason weight towards my strength capabilities. Two sets of 10 reps with 495lbs.

I tried to fill in the gap on the leg press machine, but was still limited by my knees not going over my toes. The ultra wide leg press that I got from Jeff King filled in all the short comings in my upper thigh, and I believe my sartorius which was never pronounced until I incorporated the ultra wide leg press also benefited by the movement.

Both Vastus were very full, the lateralis are not shrimpy. Impressive sight.

My favorite story of this is Bruce Randall.

After breaking his leg in 7 places in a motorcycle accident, he gave up squatting and settled on the bent legged heavy good morning as his choice for developing the lower body

And, in doing so, worked up to a 680lb squat.

In the 1950s.

Also got a 770lb deadlift.

Honestly, we should all do more good mornings.

I did good mornings a little, but I never did them with my back rounded remotely close to that. It was far from my favorite lower body exercise, but done stiff legged I liked the stretch in my hamstrings.
