Right now, I’m working on rowling 90 lbs x25 w/o having to reset for grip issues.
I have no Idea what I can do for low reps. Maybe 125x5 would be a max, but I don’t know honestly. I want to eventually do DB rows w/ my body weight. That would be an ultimate goal or some sorts. Not even close right now.
I do agree, these things really do improve grip strength tremendously. High reps are a killer on the hands as well as the lats. Great stuff.
I actually just started doing these and last week I did 5 sets of 10 with the 90’s. Not a lot of weight by mythical Internet standards, but I had the whole mind muscle thing going on. I caught a great pump too. After a few weeks of working up and getting some volume in I might go for some high rep sets. My gym has a set of 200 lbers that don’t get much use. I would like to be able to use those one day.

lol, i hear you.
i dont know what gives, but i have pulled close to 700lbs in the past, and as recent as a few weeks ago pulled 530 for reps. 90-100lb dumbbell rows are very heavy for me. yet just about every internet warrior on this site can crush the 125-200lbers.
must be something in the watter out there in cyberspace.
I can do 120s for 25 reps (with straps). Since these are the heaviest db’s in the gym I think I’m going to try and transition to doing them for 25 reps without straps over the period of a few weeks/months. But when I do these, I use a some body english. Nothing too excessive but there is some.
Maybe we should dedicate this thread to Matt K and post videos of our Kroc rows after a month’s training…kind of a christmas gift for the guy who’se inspired so many lifters.
I started doing them recently. I’m crap at pull ups, so I thought these might help. I’ve been using 3x10 with 90lbs. I have pretty big hands, so grip isn’t usually a problem, but my lats are weak. I assume they are pretty good for the rear delt as well.

Hey HT I really don’t get that!! I remember you posting that in a thread on the bodybuilding forum and I just thought to myself “damn look at his back, how come mine doesn’t look like that if we’re comparable on the rows?”.
well hanley, all of my 650lb plus deadlifts were done sumo with either a suit or briefs, so those were probably more hips than anything else,
many many years of high pulls, and 3-4 times a week of back training probably has more to do with what little mass i have on my back than anything else.
My weak link is my grip and thats why i’m doing them, i could do more but my grip goes. I can only deadlift 167.5kgs or 376.8lbs without straps so its strange that guys who deadlift more can’t row more. My legs are scrawny too and were i usually get stuck is mid shin. Aiming for 175kgs or 393lbs soon though as i’ve got it with straps before.
I can do 120x20 before my grip fails. I never have any grip issues with deadlifts, but grip strength seems to be the limiting factor for me with DB rows.
I usually start at 130 and work my way to 150 5x5. Does anyone actually see progress from failing time to time on rows, or is it just to test yourself?

This just confirms my theory that DB rows are a weird exercise. I can do 90-100lb rows for high reps (strict form, even) with very little trouble, but I’m nowhere near a 500+ deadlift.
Probably a leverage thing or something. Or maybe 'cause I have shortass arms.
case in point. i do not have dumbbells at my home gym yet, so i rigged this set up for “kroc-rows”. i have 35 kg on the bar, which is not even a “real” 35kg due to the leverage.

I got 15 with each arm on my fifth set today with the 90’s. I think the figure vixen who was beside me gave me some extra motivation. I did not plan to do anything higher than 10. I almost asked the figure champ for some Anavar. Man she was ripppped…

You should be more explosive with them, and put a bit more body english. Your form actually looks too strict in the video IMO.
The best I have ever done is 3 sets of 18,16,15 with 100s.
My deadlift is 475 conventional and 430 sumo.
