Who Here Powerlifts?

I have been powerlifting for over 20 years, and I have competed in the WABDL, APF, and APA. I have been to the last 6 WABDL worlds as a master 40-46 242. I hope to drop back down to 220’s at the end of this year.

I combine alot of different stuff together, I have been at this for so long you have to adjust and change, there are things that worked 10 years ago that won’t work for me now. I use periodization, bands, speed work and recovery. I also rotate and cycle almost everything. I also combine raw and geared in the same work outs.

I’ll be competing my first meet this Feb. I’m around 150 lbs.

Wow, there are alot of Canuck Powerlifters here. Good to see!

PL here, 275 looking to get down to the 242’s; follow mostly a WSB program with Schroder/DB Hammer stuff mixed in. Knees are a bit dinged and my future might be more push/pull although I still DE squat. It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a max squat.

I started powerlifting back in '87 at Westside at the age of 20. Louie took me from a 455 squat, 365 bench and 505 dead to an 804, 556 and 804 in under a year and a half. We didn’t do the max effort stuff yet. We trained 4 days a week by percentages ranging from 58 to 90. All sinle ply poly gear by the way.

How does that work? Can you just show up at west side, pay and get him to train you?

Is there a limit to how many people he trains?[/quote]

You generally have to try out. If accepted you are given certain goals to hit. They assess you and set up your program. If you are not making progress and following their program then you are out.

I have not trained there in years, but I still talk to some of the guys. It used to be that louie had a commercial gym in front where people paid dues. Powerlifters trained in back. You still paid dues unless you were on the team. Now, I’m sure that they still have plenty of people that pay dues to keep it up and running.

Louie also does several instructional seminars. Louie takes phone calls at the gym and has always been great about answering questions.
I personally have found that I can’t follow there template training both drug free and raw. Now I do modified version more based on tracking my volume and percentages in the 55-90%.

I’ve been competing for about 2 years. I train with Matt and lift in the APF. I also competed in THSPA all 4 years of high school. I’m a 275er right now, but I may diet down to the 242s at my next meet. Best comp lifts are 733/479.5/551.

I’ve trained Westside-style since it was called Force Training back in the late 90s. I, like Matt, am giving this progressive overload program a try for my next meet.

Haven’t done a meet yet, but I will when I get stronger.

Best RAW lifts:
165kg/363lbs squat
115kg/253lbs bench
210kg/462lbs dead
490kg/1078lbs total

I’ve trained both sheiko and dietmar wolf programs and they both work really well. I’m gonna do a couple of sheiko cycles come this fall, and then I might purchase EC’s maximum strength and try that out. I probably won’t start to compete before I can get to 600kg raw. Then I will start to compete in the IPF with single ply gear.

I haven’t competed yet but, I’m entered for my first meet on Sept. 21st.

I havent done any meets, although I have a deadlift/overhead comp coming up in August.

81kg right now, best lifts:

bench 130kg
squat 165kg (done at 70kg BW, soon to be beaten by a lot)
dead 227.5kg (shooting for 240kg at the comp).

What fed does this? That would be really interesting to watch/compete in.

I’ve been lifting for over 20 years but just started deadlifting in competitions 7 years ago. I’ve always trained and competed raw.

My training is brief and tough 3-4 sessions a week 4 exercises each session. On non-lifting days I do conditioning and core work.

Hi everyone,

I am a very inexperienced rookie from Sydney, Aus. I am 20 years old and have been training since I was 17 (just after finishing school). I started out at 49kg or approx 110lb and have slowly increased my weight to 65kg or 144lb over the course of my training. I am 5’6" tall.

There have been periods of little to no trainig for up to 6 months at the end of 06 however my consistency is unmatched currently. I would like to get to 75kg bodyweight as quick as I can and see where my lifts are and assess where I want to go from there.

The first couple of years of my training were physique oriented (bodybuilding) and I had little to no interest in working legs ever (very upsetting).

Near the start of 08 is when I actually started training as a powerlifter although I think I was always contemplating making the switch since a year before this. I have done sheiko #29 once and am currently in the first week of sheiko #37. This is so far my favourite way of training; having come from 3 and 6 day bodybuilding splits.

I find I am more interested in numbers and progress which seems to go up much faster when you concentrate on them specifically. I am not sure whether I want to compete, I plan on seeing how far my lifts come before going down that road (I am nowhere near my goal weights yet). At the moment I just LOVE training and trying to increase my strength.

Starting weights:
Bench - 40kg for 5 reps
Squat - same as bench approx. (don’t know cause I never did it).
Deadlift - 80kg for 3 reps.

Current PR’s (singles):
Squat - 110kg (with belt)
Bench - 85kg (paused raw)
Deadlift - 150kg (with belt)

I am now very much into squatting, it is my favourite at the moment and I am considering trying Smolov in the future either for front or back squat to help me get to a double bodyweight lift soon.

Anyway, I read Testosterone every day and have learned a hell of a lot from all the contributors to the site (especially the strength sports forum). I look forward to continuing to learn from all you guys and girls and maybe one day someone from my area will know what powerlifting is and I might be able to compete haha. Or I’ll just have to open my own powerlifting gym and take matters into my own hands haha.

Regards Alex.

Thanks for the explanation.

BDFPA (WDFPF) and BWLA (IPF) unequipped 90kg lifter (1st equipped meet in 2 months).

Been competeing 2.5 years and best lifts of;

Squat 230kg
Bench 145kg
Deadlift 272.5kg
Total 642.5kg

Recently hit 400lbs bench and 600lb squat equipped in the gym. Hopping for +700kg total in my 1st equipped meet in sept.

I train pretty simple. A session would be; comp lift, down sets, assistance lift/s. 3 main sessions a week with a few extra sessions thrown in and generally use short, 4 week cycles.

670/475/505 - 1650 total

best gym lifts:
