White Men CAN Jump!

Hey BodyGuard,

I’m pretty ignorant in general about basketball. With that being said, I think that dunking is just a way of qualifying people’s BBall abilities to the untrained eye.

Much like 40 yd dash times, the 225 bench rep test, and the vertical jump in football—these don’t predicate the best players, it’s how they move and react on the field. But nonetheless, people still talk about them and measure them.

Would you say that’s a fairly accurate discription?

Dunking is so irrelevant to basketball its not even funny. How about a little guy called Allen Iverson who led the league in scoring how many times? How many times a game does he dunk? I could continue with countless examples but how analogous would dunking ability be to predicting his potential performance on the court? None. I played LA Summer Pro league in 90 - in free agent camp, they measured our height, vertical and had us go thru some drills. After that, we PLAYED, and the analysis began

Finally, one of my best friends was a world class high jumper. Jumped 7’8" or so in the early 90’s. Played basketball too - and he sucked. But roll him out to the local Dunk contest, and he’d eat your lunch and take your lunch money for tomorrow too. Dunking means nothing. Ask any accomplished high school, college or NBA coach.

FIRST of ALL… Who said my vid was a proof of any basketball skills??? I didn’t even post it myself! It’s just a training vid and fooling around at the park 2 years after I stopped playing. Switzerland and France I did answer you question. I’ve never said I could have played in the “league”, just pro, meaning paid to play in those countries. I just thought it was pretty dumb to use a bs park game with no opposition to judge my skills as I had stopped playing for quite some times too. Anyways. It’s pretty useless.

But I have to disagree, dunking might only be 2 points, it’s one of the most important reason why people watch the NBA and not so much the European league or woman ball. It’s just the way it is. I’m not saying it necessarily makes you a better basketball player (my all time favorites are Larry Bird and Magic) but it’s what make the game spectacular at least.

As a Bulls fan I have to jump in here and guess he is referring to Thabo Sefolosha, 13th pick in the last draft. Thabo is looking like he will turn out to be a damn good pro. To be honest I can’t disagree with the fact that Fred doesn’t look very fluid/smooth or fundamentally sound. To me it just looks like a guy that trains pretty seriously and is a recreational skill player. You did bait him into a flame war though.

I agree and I did not intend to bait him. Very insightful and accurate post.

Well obviously when you’re 225lbs and 6ft you can’t be that fluid. But HELLO, I still jump 38inches high, broad jump over 10feet and run a 4.5 forty. AND…I don’t play anymore!!!

How can you judge someone by a day at the park anyways? One day I played one-on-one with sedale threat, well guess what. He wasn’t very fluid either, and looked like a guy at the park… Now I’m not saying I’m nearly as skilled as he was, but just making the point you don’t judge from a bs vid on the net. That’s straight up dumb. Anyways I have nothing to prove to you guys, if you want to play stupid, then so be it.

I can judge you b/c I played. Even fooling around, I can see the problem with your shot and I can clearly see you can’t finish left. I acknowledged later you were heavier. A player can always recognize another player. Some of the greatest shooters of all times still hold shooting clinics, fat and out of shape, but their mechanics didn’t change. I can tell by your shooting mechanics that you are NOT getting that shot off against high level competition. And if you CAN’t get your shot off against high level competition, all this discussion about where either of us played or didn’t play is pretty damn irrelevant. Let me repeat though - you are a helluva athlete.

And if its a “bs vid from the net”…why on earth did you put it there?

AI??? Are you crazy? Check youtube, he used to dunk like crazy during his early seasons… You’re just playing dumb. I know you understand my point.

And I guess my biggest point that I wish I made clear earlier was here is this guy who is a marvelous athlete no doubt. But it was also obvious that he put ALOT of work into his vert and is quite enamored with dunking. Who else would have a vid of himself doing various dunks over the YEARS. I guess my real point was imagine what might have been for this fine athlete if he put that same effort into improving his basketball skills. He obviously loved basketball.

My beef is not with him per se. The playgrounds have been full of guys just like him for the last 20 years. Long on hops and highlight crap and short on skill. And that is not just my opinion, it is a fact that any respected basketball mind will repeat. They don’t make Michael Jordans anymore - he was a complete and fundamentally sound player. Even the closest to him talent wise - Kobe Bryant ( his dad by the way played on my summer pro league team at the ripe age of 40 - and Joe Bryant could STILL play) - falls way short of being a complete player fundamentally. The next time Kobe shuts someone down defensively will be the first. MJ did it night in and night out. I could go on and on…facts or facts.

bs vid from the PARK!!!

Oh now you’re wondering??? lol I DIDN’T POST IT ON HERE!!! How many times do I need to say it. it’s Acedeus or whatever. Did the muscles and fat atrophy your brain? Or have you got beat up too often in Ju-jitsu???

I posted my footage and will post more. Your turn now! You talk, now you better walk or you’re just one more faker off the net…

Now you’re just plain uninformed or stupid. I live in the Philadelphia area. AI was not dunking “like crazy” in his early seasons or EVER. Can he dunk? Yes. Has he dunked in games? INFREQUENTLY.

Is dunking the reason everyone is watching the NBA? Actually, the lack of skill is the exact reason they have been losing audience. The reason people tune in is b/c quite simply, the NBA has some of the best athletes in the world and nowhere is the game of basketball played on a higher level. Even with two run and guns teams like a Phoenix, the actual dunks and “ESPN” highlight moments are few and far between. If you’re telling me millions tune in b/c of 3 dunks a game, you’re just plain ignorant…or maybe the only thing you are watching in Europe are the ESPN highlights.

And no, someone here may have posted your vid, but YOU filmed it and then put it on youtube. Give me a break. At least be factually correct if you want to continue this stupid post. I’d rather let it die.

Let’s leave it - as I have tried many times now - by saying you are a great athlete.

And I finish left too you idiot… Get your glasses on.

You’re too defensive. I have seen a good amount of guys your size that were fluid in their movements, especially if the were just standing around doing stationary dribbling tricks.

All I did was state what my experienced basketball eyes saw. By watching the footage I would never have guessed you played at the professional level. If you don’t want your basketball skills up for critique don’t post a video of yourself standing solo in front of a camera strutting around like you’re God’s gift.

That being said, the lifts were fun to watch and those are some nice numbers.

This requires no further comment. If you think a highlight reel supports your position that AI “dunked like crazy” in games…and that dunking (about 5 times a game) is the reason the NBA is the most watched basketball league, this discussion is going nowhere. Again, let’s leave it with…you’re a great athlete. Good luck to you and with your goals.

Oh yes, right again. I’m a giant powerlifter jealous of you’re no rhythm white guy dribbling skills. Guess again, I’m only 5’ 11" 185 and if I were to dribble in front of a camera I wouldn’t look like I was about to fall over or lose control of the ball, nor do I shoot from my waist.

I find it very hard to believe that your shot used to be any different considering that a layoff from play its self would have no effect on the neural specific skill of shooting a basketball. The AI argument is idiotic.

He drops 30 a game and if he is lucky would get one possibly two dunks a game. How did he get the other 26-28 points? 10 were probably free throws, 8 off jumpers and 8 off drives. Of course you can find a 3.5 minute compilation of dunks spanning from his high school days.

By the way, where are your highlights?
