Here’s the GSP/Serra fight:

Thank you SWR

I love matt serra I thought for sure he was going to loose. I promised myself I would start traning in BJJ again if he won.

Watching GSP lose in such a way broke my heart. But I’m sure he will have the belt again by the end of this year.
Pretty much. I love GSP. Such a class guy, I always love rooting for him, same reason I like watching Hughes fight, but always root for him to get his butt kicked. I was at least hoping there’d be some exchanges or ground work. It also looked to me like he slipped several times, opening up more room for Serra to pound him and killing his chances to recover.

Good for Serra, who I like as well, but not nearly as much as I was disappointed to see GSP lose so fast. He won’t get another title shot for a while though, politics. Also the fact that there’s got to be at least one other title defense for Serra now, which will take a long time to build up and develop that match.

First, a fight is never stopped as long as someone can intelligently defend themselves…or at least try. And GSP was doing that much.

Second of all, GSP never tapped out, or even tried to tap from what I could see. At the end he simply tried to turn and cover his face to stop the beating. At that point, the best ref in mma stopped the fight.

It was a good stoppage and at the appropriate time.
I don’t consider having your arms straight out in front of you while you are on your back getting pounded in the face an intelligent defense, but there is a bit of subjectivism there. However, as another poster mentioned, Pierre clearly taps out so obviously in his mind he thought it was (probably past) time to stop the fight. I agree Big John is a good ref which is why I was surprised it took him so long to stop it. I bet if it was Pierre pounding on Serra he would have called it quicker.

Watch it again. St. Pierre clearly tapped 3 times while he was getting pummeled.
I don’t like either GSP or Matt Serra but I was rooting for the underdog to win. Serra could have gotten knocked out just as easily if not easier then the other Matt did with a kick to the head.

All the spike in the world won’t save you if you get clocked in the head that hard. This was a very dangerous fight, could have gone either way but I guess Matt Serra had a good strategy and didn’t get caught with a hard hit.

I was salivating when GSP’s head was bouncing up and down on the canvas like a basketball. He got his fucken head beat in! Great fight! To bad he lost his belt, he’s a fricken excellent athlete and awesome striker. Gotta give him that. I’m glad be beat Matt H though. Peace

Agreed. Sokoudjou is on a roll, first little Nog, now Arona.

I thought the ref could’ve let Arona go a little longer, the outcome probably would have been the same, but he did seem to be trying to defend himself at the point where Sodoku was loading up for a soccer kick. The guy must have some serious weight in those hands, both Arona and lil Nog have good chins.

Sokoudjou is my new hero. To somehow find his way from Cameroon to train with Team Quest, take two seemingly suicidal fights in a row that he was brought in to lose, and now he’s probably going to be ranked in the top 5 or 6 LHW’s in the world. He is a stud and a genuine class act.

The last one got removed, for obvious reasons, so if anyone didn’t see it yet, GSP and Serra:

And if that one gets deleted:

anyone have a video of the sanchez koscheck fight?

any other videos as well would be nice

btw
big john is not a good ref
the black guy herb dean is good, but i have seen too many fights called to soon or too late when big john is reffing

I hate guys who show up looking to simply counter. It leads to fights that end up reminding me too much of what boxing has become, fighters unwilling to commit who spend 10 to 15 rounds circling and accomplishing nothing.

The goal is the win the fight. You probably hate Bernard Hopkins or Winky Wright (defensive counter punchers to the extreme)… but they win.
In some “cosmic” sense, the goal is to win the fight. But if you think that is all that modern MMA is, then you clearly don’t know much at all about the sporting aspect of MMA. I take if you haven’t heard of the “Matt Lindland effect.”

Watching that fight on Youtube I was surprised it took so long for Big John to stop it. Pierre was getting pummeled on the ground so bad that he had to roll over and tap out. I definitely didn’t pick that fight but Serra did okay against BJ Penn so he has got some skills, good for him with the win. This shakes things up a bit.
I was not surprised at all. NO ONE, including John McCarthy, thought GSP would lose. So he was (like everyone else) waiting for GSP to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

Every time I see a guy go out with the intent to do enough to win the decision rather than finish the fight, I question the direction of the sport.
Agreed. If guys want to fight slowly, then do away with time limits and go back to the good old days. You can’t have it both ways: Stalling but also having time limits to get yourself out of trouble. (See, e.g., the takedown w/30 seconds left in the round.)

The Japanese openeing video for Sokoudjou nicknames him Lionking. When asked what his favorite food is he says “rats”. Awesome

Sokoudjou vs. Arona

Frye vs. Thompson

At least Kos had a take down. Fuck Head Sanchez fought like a scared bitch. After Kos took round 1 - I think he was putting it on Sanchez to try and win a round. But Sanchez didn’t have the stones to actually try.

Diego pretty much proved my assertion that he’s not near the fighter he imagines himself to be.

And what the fuck was up with the mariachi band? That pretty much set the tone for the fight.

As much as I dislike Diego, he is good and he is tough. I do not think he’ll be getting the shit kicked out of him.

You’re probably right. But my dislike of Sanchez is greater than my common sense.

SOmone somewhere will beat him like he deserves to be beat. I just hope I am watching when it happens.
i’m sure he’ll be beaten some time, but probably by decision and not from any ass whooping to speak of.

unless he sticks around way too long ken shamrock style, i doubt he’ll ever have his ass handed to him.
