Told Not to Squat Any Longer

Told not to squat after this knee surgery 10 weeks ago. Said I have bone on bone on the patella and squatting will make it worse.

anyone have any thoughts on this, alternitives? He says I can pull all I want so I can still deadlift

Commiserations man. That is my worst nightmare. I’ve been worrying about this myself lately as I’ve had a bit of knee pain but, fortunately my xrays have come back saying my cartilage is fine, so just inflammation. I guess you’ll just have to devote all your time to becoming a great deadlifter! Look on the brightside he could have said no weights at all! Can you leg press?

Yeah the moron says leg press but not squat???

That was a question in my mind as well. Is it the degree of knee flexion that matters? A leg press will produce as much or more knee flexion as a squat. Even a partial squat is better than no squat at all.

They affect the knee very differently as far as “shear” and “compressive” forces are concerned dickhead. If It was all about flexion you wouldn’t be able to deadlift either would you twat!. Learn some physiology!.

An interesting response. I can only go by personal experience that a properly executed squat causes no more stress on my knees than a deadlift or a leg press. I am willing to listen to any information you have on the subject however. Without the unnecessary personal attacks, please.

Google some scholarly articles on Leg press v Squat knee forces and have a read and see what you think. It shows how they affect the knee completely differently depending upon angle of flexion and foot placement etc. My “unecessary personal attack” was in response to Toshiero calling me a moron for asking a perfectly sensible question. If Toshiero wasn’t such a moron himself he may have thought to ask his doctor what it was about the deadlift that is ok but not the squat, then he might have been able to work out for himself what he may or may not be able to do.

My apologies for misinterpreting your reponse as being towards me. And thank you for the clarification and the suggestions.

No problem. I just can’t understand the mentality of someone who would post a question asking for ideas and suggestions and then just be rude to those people who are trying to help.

LOL dude I wasn’t calling you a moron, I was calling my doc a moron. sorry if it came across wrong.

LOL - Gotta luv the interwebz.

It’s definitely not the best vehicle for interpersonal communication.

LOL yep. isn’t print a wonderful thing?

I understood your message, but I can see where it could be confused. I wouldn’t do partial squats, partials put more strain on the knee than full squats.

Sorry for interpreting it wrong. I guess you can read it two ways! I feel a bit stupid now.

LOL No biggie farmer! yeah after reading it seems partials are bad as well. Crap!!!

You could do heavy famer’s walks couldn’t you? I know its more of an “over all” exercise but it would have to hit the quads and hams prety good wouldn’t it?

Toshiero -

A few years ago, I blew out my back doing squats. In fact, I was just warming up, so not even having the gratification of a heavy weight causing damage.

I couldn’t so much as walk or get up off the floor for days. I went to a sports D.O. in the area and got X-Rays which showed L5-S1 degeneration and spondylosis, plus some other shitty disc degeneration in lumbar spine.

Anyway, she ordered P/T and told me I’d never squat or deadlift again. At the time my max was closing in at 300 lb at b/w of about 175.

“Never.Squat.Again”.

That didn’t sit well with me.

Found a chiro who said the same thing. My wife’s aunt is a chiro and we were going on a family trip down there (500 miles), so I went to see a doc at her place. He got me walking again but said similar that I’d never “squat that heavy again”.

Back home I called 3 other chiros until I found one SPECIFICALLY with a SPORTS background. She told me that while she wouldn’t recommend it, I would heal and I could squat again AFTER A LONG STEADY RECOVERY.

I did bodyweight workouts for months before I squatted with much more than light dumbells. Put a bar on my back and slowly added weight.

Three years later I’m (deep) squatting 505 and plan on going farther.

My (long winded) point is that you shouldn’t be afraid to shop for doctors who are willing to work with you. Specifically seek out sports medicine specialists as they know and understand your plight. They will work with you instead of turning you away from your goals. Professional athletes tear the hell out of their bodies and come back to compete at pro levels, so there’s no reason why you can’t find somebody to get you back to your level, which I’m assuming is less intense than NFL or NHL players…

Call around. Interview doctors before you see them.

^ Agreed, almost same story about my back Steely but with three disc herniation. Now I am back up in the 400’s on squat and dead. Ask your Dr. Tosheiro if you can still run? If he says yes go find another Dr. cause running puts more stress and pounding on your knee than squating does.

While “You can’t squat” does sound awful, there are alternatives. Yes, they won’t be exactly the same as squatting but you can get pretty close.
Belt squat - much less back pressure, also allows you to be more flexible with the knee/feet positioning than barbell squat.
Farmers walk - hits the entire body very similar to the way squat does.
Prowler push - works the entire body with the lower body emphasis.
Depending on the range of motion your knees can handle - high box squats might also be an option.

  1. I would die if I couldn’t squat, and

  2. I have your avatar tattooed on my ass.

Good luck with recovery/finding suitable alternatives.
