Hey BT, this is interesting information, and I’m glad you posted it. But I just want to offer the following perspective. I have been reading recommendations about maximizing HGH for a long long time – from when I started reading Muscle Media 2K back around 1993. The thing I have always noticed over the years is that anything I tried that would supposedly maximize HGH did pretty much nothing. I would not notice better sleep, better recovery, nor better rate of muscle growth. The first exception came a couple years ago with CT’s lactate threshold training for fat loss. I do not know if it affected HGH because I have no way of testing it. I did not notice better sleep or better recovery. But it sure made a big, noticeable difference in fat loss without muscle loss.
As far as carbs, insulin, and HGH, I am skeptical whether this kind of manipulation is worthwhile in terms of real-world results. I really believe that our understanding of insulin would change dramatically if we could/would MEASURE the effects of our carb manipulations. For example, say you try to avoid “spiking” insulin by avoiding carbs PWO. Instead you use a bunch of whey protein. Well, whey protein increases insulin. So do other proteins. In one study, beef raised insulin as much as most carb sources. And in the study, that was an average across individuals. Individuals probably have their own unique responses. It is possible that long-term carb restriction might magnify an individual’s insulin response to protein.
I am skeptical that reducing carbs will cause a meaningful increase in HGH. HGH is supposedly associated with sleep quality. In my own long-term low-carb diet (over a year), my sleep quality was noticeably the worst it had ever been. In fact, when instead I ate evening meals designed to raise insulin higher, say with beef and mashed potatoes for dinner, I slept incredibly better.
Now, I don’t have an HGH meter to see how those carbs/insulin might be affecting HGH, but I do have a device that monitors my sleep to some degree. Based on my self-experimentation, I am absolutely sure that having carbs before bed, and a higher-carb diet in general, leads to better sleep for me. I fall asleep faster, have fewer wakenings, and have more REM sleep on a higher-carb diet and/or with carbs before bed.
I’m not sure that’s a question, and also, there are multiple pathways to increase insulin. The “carb dependent” pathway could very well have a different impact on GH release. Also, this approach doesn’t increase GH at all. It simply prevents carbs from negating natural (sleep or exercise induced) raises in GH.
There may be better ways but I have been using the following for quite some time and it works well for me. I mix two scoops of Surge and one scoop of whey in 32 ounces of cold water and start sipping at the beginning of my workout. I continue sipping it during my workout. When I am finished with my workout I add one scoop of creatine, shake and chug what’s left. And yes, all three of those products were purchased from Biotest.
Today I added an addition to this protocol after receiving my latest purchase from Biotest. 90 minutes prior to working out I took on serving of Alpha-GPC and 30 minutes prior to working out I ate one Finibar. That was followed by what I explained above. And yes, those two products were also purchased from Biotest. Placebo or not my workout tonight was great.
I do what works for me and helps me achieve my goals. I feel no obligation to use Biotest products because I use this site. They open it up for anyone to use whether or not that person uses their products. I choose to use Biotest products because I have always been pleased with the quality of the products I purchase from them. If I ever suggest a Biotest product to someone it is because I have used it with success. I don’t think one should be too shocked or upset for someone to recommend Biotest products on a site hosted free by Biotest to anyone who wants to use it. Free. And provides, once again free of charge, plenty of interesting and educational articles, workout protocols, real world tips from real world people, etc. And for them to shill their product, on their site, provided free to anyone who wants to use it with no obligation whatsoever to purchase their products, is not offensive. In fact, it makes sense. So if you don’t care about this site and the free information provided herein, then it doesn’t make sense to be here using it. And if you don’t like Biotest and users on this site recommneding Biotest products, that is your right but it should not be upsetting to you. And if you want to recommend methods that work for you with the hopes of helping someone out and/or saving them some money, that is great! But if you are going to get defensive and abrasive because of these things, then perhaps you have stumbled across a site not very well suited for you.
I am an old man, I have several injuries that keep me from physically doing what I did when I was younger, I do not have aspirations to be “HUGE”, I have my own goals and I trust several Biotest products to help me achieve them. I also try to remain respectful of others whether or not they reciprocate.

yes he doesn’t know who they are because he has no interest in bjj. it’s not like he’s on a jitz site. you are on a bodybuilding website. there is a combat forum but it says across the top of the page “the intelligent and relentless pursuit of muscle”. There are articles here about supplements and nutrition/training written by CT. You are posting in the supplements and nutrition forum of THIS SITE without knowing who the authors of this site are and what they have written. Do you not see the disconnect in the parallel of ignorance you tried to pass off as justification for you not knowing who one of, if not the, top author on this site is?
