Why are you so concerned about weight class if you’re not looking to set records? (are you?)

Seems to me like it’s taking a lot of the pleasure out of the whole process for you. Don’t misunderstand me, I think you look lean and healthy which is good.

Just my .02.
Hmmm…good question…I guess because my goal was to lift in the 181 class so…now if I fail…well…I’ve failed whether it was a stupid goal or not…

My dad had his first heart attack at age 48…7 years older than me…I’m always thinking about it, but thinking about it more and more as I get older and see pictures of him when he was 41…the old man didn’t look too bad at 41…looked kinda like me actually…at 71 he’s a 250 lb wreck…still happy and mobile and I love the guy, but I don’t want to walk down that road…was thinking if I entered a meet every year at 181 I’d have a goal to stick with at a relatively healthy weight for my 5’8-ness…

Can I get up off the couch now ? :-)
My name’s not Sigmund, and I’m not a casting director, so no need for a couch.

I understand, you’re using weight as your marker for health. Might be a little bit of semantics, but in that case I’d think bodyfat or using waist size as a rule of thumb would be more specific. Plus what DJ said about regularly checking your health markers.

Just enjoy the meet I say. No one is going to say you failed if you weigh 185 vs. weighing 181. And since you’re in the Old Folks division, I’m going to guess that you’re still going to place and get a plastic trophy!

If only ! It’s not age-specific to my knowledge and belief.

Right groin sore. Right knee tendons popping like an old mans.

I know I haven’t been exactly killing it prepping for this contest, but it’s weighing on my mind a lot. I’m actually a pretty nervous person, so the unknown of the first meet sucks. Can’t wait to be done.

Think I’ll do another one later in the year, but work, kids, volunteer activities keep me pretty busy so the added pressure of this is naggin’.

Peas. Owt.

How old are you? Did you enter in the masters’ division?

I was such a nervous wreck before my first meet. I mean, for weeks beforehand. I don’t like to be in front of people. I remember thinking I would either pass out or pee my pants on my first squat. Neither happened. And I was pretty hooked after that first competition. Felt higher than a kite with my teeny-tiny numbers! Do you have someone to help you at the meet?

She Say is supposed to come along and shoot videos, etc…but…it’s awful early in the morning for her…

I was so nervous at my first contest I gave serious thought to not showing up. And my numbers weren’t as good as yours. Glad I went - made some friends, set a PR, was thrilled to death. Don’t worry.

Thanks homeys ! Drinks at my house after the meet !

Thanks for the offer, SenSay, sadly it’s a 3 day drive to Texas and will be busy, but will settle for videos.

182.5 homeys. .6 pounds to go.

Hey…when you do your 3 tries per lift how do you pick the pounds? do you go balls to the walls on the 1st lift?

I was thinking:

Squat
240
260
280

Bench
275
295
315

Dead
335
355
375

The first lift in each set I can handle fairly easily, the second is close to my personal best and the last would be a personal best.

Thanks!

Do NOT go balls to walls on opener! The opener should be easy, a weight you know absolutely you can make with perfect form. You don’t want to bomb out right away - get some numbers posted.

During warmup, I recommend taking weight up but not exceeding opener. Do just enough to get ready, not too much to wear yourself out.

You can plan the 3rd lift to be slightly more than you’ve maxed before, assuming your training has built strength. Plan 2nd lift to be halfway between 3rd and opener.

If 2nd goes nicely, definitely go for the gold. If 2nd seems tough, might want to rethink the 3rd.

My .02, given my experience and talking with others.

I had the same questions on the 3 lifts, good points cav. Go gettem’ Sen!

I’m a little confused on the card system.

I’m believing at weigh-in I tell the judges my openers (first attempt) for all three lifts. Then those numbers are ‘locked’.

AFTER I finish my first squat, do I then have 1 minute to fill out the next card where I tell the judges my 2nd attempt for the squat?

Rinse repeat for bench and deads with some variance on the deads as you get 5 cards? (but only 3 tries still…

Thanks amigoes!

You too Led !

Oh yeah…can I wear boxer briefs (underarmor no lining)? the rules say no boxer shorts. I really don’t want to ask the meet organizer this one

Also…do I write my lift amounts in kilos or lbs ?

Thanks!!

Oh yeah…

 1. Do you eat after weigh in? I’m assuming yes. Any suggestions on what to eat?

 2. Do you show up for weigh in in your singlet? Do you put shorts on over top for the drive to the gym and then take them off for weigh in? I’m not modest, or worried about looking goofy, just don’t want to look like a nerd.

Thanks!

When I weighed in, I was taken behind a curtain and told I could keep my clothes on, or take something off, or take everything off . . . my choice. If you’re trying to make a weight class and you’re right on the line, it might make you more competitive to make a lower class.

After weighing in, they told me “Eat! Eat!” I’d recommend protein - make sure total recovery from your training, and whatever calories you need. Do NOT start experimenting with weird stuff, go with what you know.

Regarding attempts, you have until five minutes before each lift starts to change your opener. After each attempt, you need to submit your subsequent attempt within a reasonable amount of time. I usually verbally ask people if they have forgotten to approach the table. There’s no clock on submitting attempts. But if you totally forget, I believe you automatically have to repeat the lift if you failed it the first time and are bumped 2.5 kilos if you are successful.

I have no idea what you are referring to in terms of “five cards” for deads. You can change your third-attempt DL up till the bitter end.

No boxer briefs for USAPL. Tighty whities.

Write your meet attempts in kilos. They will have a conversion chart for you.

You should pound food after weigh-in. I start with Campbells chicken noodle soup. Lots of sodium to help you retain water. I like bagels, peanut butter, avocado, protein shakes, tuna, you name it.

Show up to the meet in normal clothes. Strip down to your undies for weigh-ins. Your weight affects your wilks. There’s no benefit to weighing in in anything other than the bare essentials. Put your singlet on when you’re ready to warm up.

Good luck to you!

Ah, good point, Snap.

Try to find some way of keeping food going through the day, protein shakes and whatever you find easily digestible. And carry a bottle of water with you - don’t get dehydrated!
