Nez1Nez: The Next Superheroine

Squats, dreads, overhead press, cleans, box jumps, push ups, pull-ups, knee raises. I really like these things. I dislike curls. Haha.

And backward lunges…

Haha. Typo.

Nez, curious, what got you into lifting? Like what made you want to?

My Gf is of small stature like yourself, and she kind of would like to lift, but kind of goes back and forth (afraid of getting ‘too big’ and such). So what made you commit to this kind of hobby/lifestyle?

I got sick of being embarrassed of my body.
I was 20 + lbs over weight with zero energy. I wanted to join a bootcamp by my house and went a couple of days and then my husband suggested we join a gym and both get in shape. I went to classes and did cardio- I quickly got unmotivated because I saw NO RESULTS.

And then I decided to copy my husbands work outs. Lots of tears because I was intimidated and felt embarrassed… But when I started getting the moves down and lifting some pretty heavy weight (to me!) I was hooked. It was empowering and I felt strong. You can’t beat it- I’m a lifer. You tell your girl that its imposssssssible to get big. Trust me. Lifting has made me melt away fat and has given me energy through the roof. Boom.

Spidey,

My girlfriend is similar stature as Nez here (hence why I have been following this thread thoroughly while cheering Nez on!) and has been getting into this lifestyle over the past couple of years with basically no prior experience or desire to do it. A very similar story as Nez here.

It started b/c she had all kinds of health problems, such as a blood infection for YEARS. This was back when we were friends and I suggested to her let’s fix her diet and get her moving. Within 6 months of her just eating better and doing cardio 4x/week, the blood infection finally went away. She was fighting this infection for YEARS.

Once she saw the kind of effect such a simple change could make, I moved her to an non-intimidating workout program through beachbody, Chalean Extreme. I fount that if I tried to get her into lifting weights, I stressed her out. Not sure why and she wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t anything I was doing, but she had all her own, internal hang ups. After following Chalean for a bit, she was ready to move on. It got her into much better shape, helped her understand movements and such, but the results were finally starting to stall.

I now moved her to a little bit more advanced workout designed by Chad Waterbury which includes cardio, heavier weight lifting (6 rep range), and higher paced, circuit training (12 rep range). She’s loving it! Once she does this for a couple of months, I’m going to move her into more of what Nez is doing.

As Nez reports, she feels so much better about herself, she has more energy, confidence, stronger (she likes to show that she can do a pull-up or a bunch of perfect push-ups all the time). It’s definitely been fun, but the key is, you definitely HAVE to be patient and understanding. Her expectations are skewed due to all those tv commercials about how easy it is to get ripped in 90 days and blah blah blah and she still has a hard time with the scale weight mentality.

Another part that made her commit to this lifestyle is we live it together now. It’s kind of our thing and people notice :).

Hopefully there’s some nuggets in there for you in helping your gf adapt this lifestyle. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns about how to get her started. Lord knows I’ve made a TON of mistakes, ending in crying and hatred sometimes lol.

Wow thanks guys. Congrats on all the progress Nez, that’s an incredible change!

And ZJstrope, thank you. I’ll try to take a similar approach if she seems like she really is committed to trying it. But like ya’ll have mentioned, the fact she is very self-conscious makes it a bit difficult.
