New HARDCORE Gym in Brooklyn

Just wanted to get the word out that there is a new hardcore gym in Brooklyn. The place is called Aviator Sports and Recreation. It is a huge sports complex at the old Floyd Bennett Airfield, similiar to Asphalt Green in Manhattan. They offer all kinds of sports leagues (basketball, football, baseball, soccer etc… for people of all ages) and have great amenities like a sports bar, recovery area, drink bar etc…

Anyhow, back to the good news: the fitness part of the gym is HARDCORE. The guy I talked to said they have 8 power racks, Olympic platforms and bumpers, a GHR and reverse hyper, and all sorts of bars and chains. He said Dave Tate is a friend of his and all the equipment is from Elite! Membership is only $600 a year! The website is www.aviatorsports.com

Great find! Now I have a place to lift with I am in Brooklyn.

If they will be friendly to chalk, deadlifting, and … gasp … making noise with the weights you should post it up on powerliftingwatch.com in the gym section.

now i have to move to Brooklyn

Made it out to check this place out today. One word to describe it: INCREDIBLE! This place could pass for a D1 weight room. I highly, highly doubt there is a nicer commercial gym anywhere in the country.

The place has 4 of the huge PowerLift power racks. Each rack has an olympic lifting platform on each side of the rack and then a huge cage in which you can easily do sumo deads or wide-stance squats or overhead presses. Of course the chinning apparatus and removable dip apparatus on each.

Another rack on the other side of the power rack. So basically you have 8 olympic lifting platforms, 4 huge power racks, and 4 standard racks. All sorts of bars (cambered, safety squat, thick bar) with all sorts of chains/bands/bumpers/regular weights nearby. Chalk is allowed.

Two beautiful, top-of-the-line GHRs from Elite and 2 hypers next to them. Reverse hypers and dumbells to come in the next few days. Boxes for jumps and box squats everywhere and then the usual gym stuff (lots of HammerStrength). Everything is brand spanking new and shiny. Plenty of cardio equipment as well.

The gym is the real deal. Membership is only $50 a month, cheaper if a year is paid in full (for the gym only).

any idea how much for a day pass?

Any idea if they offer olympic lifting instruction>

Shit man, this place sounds awesome.

Any idea about how far it is from East Midtown by train?

I’m pretty sure I’d be willing to make at least one trip out within the next 2 weeks before I go back to school. If any people in the area are interested in getting a lift in, let me know.

They are giving away 1 week passes for free. Their really cool and laid-back. Just go in and tell them you want a week pass to check the place out.

I beleive they will be offering olympic lifting coaching. They are getting a triple pull extension apparatus, which helps teach the olympic lifts.

The head trainer there designs programs for a lot of pro athletes including the NY Islanders.

Subway directions are on the website. There isn’t a subway stop nearby, so you have to get out off the train and hop on a bus in a kind-of shady part of Brooklyn. I personally wouldn’t do it, espicially at night.

If you guys are in the city you should really check this place out. It will blow you away.

Id like to go, maybe we can organize a T-Nation outing. Id guess its over an hour by mta.

From their website:
Take the 2 or 5 train to the Flatbush Avenue/Brooklyn College
station (last stop)
? Take the Q35 bus one block from the train station ? Flatbush
Ave. between Nostrand Avenue and Avenue H
? Request the bus to stop across from Aviator Sports and
Recreation at Floyd Bennett Field

Sounds like a great place, and 600 is cheap for the city.

Dave’s equipment is the best.

I’m in if you guys want to meet there some day for a T-Nation invasion…Would be nice if they hosted a powerlifting meet, we get very little play in this area.

Shit man, that would be ridiculous. I never imagined not having to go to VA, WA, AL, etc to lift, haha.

Unfortunately, I’m nowhere near new york…

The really sad thing is, this IS what EVERY gym SHOULD look like…

man, this is too bad. I got all excited because I thought this meant a hardcore gym would be nearby me (i live in the suburbs) unfortunately after mapquesting it, it looks like its actually a little further for me than south side gym in CT. On the other hand I’ve heard powerhouse gym in yonkers is supposed to be pretty hardcore. anyone ever been there?

I plan on opening a hardcore gym in Western New York after college…do you think it can be a success considering 90% of people who lift are wimps and dont lift hard

not really, its hard to start a gym like that, especially in new york.
its funny you brought this thread back, because today at the gym i train there were a bunch of bodybuilders talking about how great aviator was.
