Serious Gyms in Jersey

Anyone know of any gyms with a decent power rack and some serious members in the Jersey City, Secaucus, Hoboken area in New Jersey? Schools almost out so I’m looking for a gym to train in and the Bally’s around here are full of soccer moms and 30 year old guy members who do nothing but cable flies…

I don’t know of any in that area, but if you ever wind up farther south, Apollon gym in Edison is good.

I’ve been to Apollon Gym (great place), as well as Bob Bonham’s Strong N’ Shapely (huge well stocked,… definitely a dream gym for any hardcore trainer!). Can’t really offer much more than that,… I’m a NY boy

That’s not a commercial gym, though.

Stu!! Thank you so much for the Strong and Shapely reccomendation. The place is like heaven for a T Man or any serious weightlifter whether powerlifter or bodybuilder. A monolift, power rack, every single machine you can think of x 2. Heavy DB, benches with adjustable pins so i dont have to hog the powerrack for pin presses anymore ;). Literally everything and the place is huge and pretty quite. Very motivational place. Ronnie and Dorian have even worked out there. I was like a little kid in a candy store, I signed up right then and there. :))

Diamond Gym? Thats in Maplewood, isn’t it?
My history teacher told me I should go with him sometime, I’ll have to look into it now…

Apollon gym as mentioned before is great, been there a few times with some friends and to watch a meet, excellent place.

Yeah, it’s seriously stocked, and f-ing huge to boot. I actually chatted with Bob the first time I was there a few years ago for a seminar, and every time I came back (at least a year later), he always remembered me and came over to say hi. Definitely a good guy who has been around the ‘industry’ (if you can call it that) for a long time.

I work out at Retro fitness in Wallington NJ. It’s a small town next to Passaic. Not to far from Strong and Shapely. It’s not a hardcore underground gym but it’s got:

2 squat racks
1 olympic platform
2 Smith machines
All of the good Hammer Strength machines including the bench press machine PX loves
Dumbells up to 140
More than enough free weight.
Plenty of guys in there bigger than me.
Once you join one, you have access to any Retro in NJ. There’s alot.
…$20 a month!!!

I’ve worked out in 5 different Retro Fitnesses in NJ. Every single one of them had a shitload of free weights. Dumbbells up to at least 120 and every one had at least 1 squat or power rack.

There’s a powerhouse gym that just opened around the corner. I haven’t checked it out but I’ve been hearing great things about it.

Also check out Absolute Fitness in Mattawan, great owners and knowledgable.

I just looked at the website. Can you just walk in and lift there? Looks like a crossfit deal with coaching sessions.

I go to fitness city in Matawan because its 24 hours. It has one squat rack, one power cage, a smith machine, dumbells up to 150s but it smells like shit in there. Like a musty dank dungeon.

I’ve heard good things about retro in NJ. They must have their shit together because I always thought of them as a joke.

The name and price makes them sound like a joke, but I’ve been to the following locations and have nothing but good things to say about that gym:

Walllington
East Brunswick
Fair Lawn (new)
Paramus (new)

The 24 hour fitness in Hasbrouck Heights is awesome too. I know they get a bad rap on this board but the one in Hasbrouck heights is huge and has everything a serious lifter could want. It’s pricey though. LIke $800 or $900 a year when they opened 12 months ago.

Do they have hair mousse in the locker rooms?

I wouldn’t know. I’m bald.

I can tell you the places I listed have squat and power racks, a shitload of free weight, heavy dumbells and the employees don’t give a shit what you do.

isnt Bev Francis? Powerhouse Gym in jersey?

I’ve been to the 24 Hour Fitness in HH, its like a mall when you first walk in. Then you go downstairs and it has a shitload of free weights.

Still the fact that is has a BB court attracts alot of dumbass kids who take up space and get in the way. Fuck I sound old.
