How ‘hardcore’ is your gym? Where i train at, XSport Fitness in Lombard, we’ve got an ON sponsored natty, a guy who’s placed top 5 in Masters nats twice, and NPC judge who’s been competing for almost 3 decades, and a guy who took 2nd in his class at junior nats this year. We’ve got 3 or 4 other guys competing and a handful of competitive powerlifters. For a commercial gym there’s a lot of meatheads and some figure competitors as well.
The manager of Georgia Tech’s gym must have a goal of making it as anti-hardcore as possible. It’s more than just forbidding chalk and Olympic weightlifting variations; I was kicked out today because I wore my Vibram Five Fingers to deadlift. When CrossFit is considered to be “too hardcore,” you know your gym is anti-hardcore.
My gym, Powerhouse in yonkers is pretty hardcore. We have all the necessary equipment, DB’s up to 200lbs, deadlift and squatting highly encouraged. Tons of huge dudes. We have a powerlifting team (yonkers power crew) they have some videos on youtube and compete regularly. I think we are up to 3 guys with their pro cards as well. Also there are maybe 1 or 2 girls in the gym at any given time so you know its hardcore lol
Bodies in motion here in Cali. I like the facility though it’s not hardcore. When I was in bible college we had pig iron with dumbells and barbells outside in the cold or heat… that was pretty hardcore.
My gym doesn’t even have a sound system My weightlifting gym consists of one ‘all in one’ style pull down machine, a bench press, and a few curling bars all squashed into one corner. Then there are the 25 squat racks lined up around the room.

HAHA that’s funny. I just graduated from Tech and there are(were) some(<5) powerlifters when I used to be there. Cool to see a fellow yellow jacket.
My gym has dbs up to 200 lb, 2 huge tires for flipping, a prowler, a couple kegs, a platform for doing olympic lifts and a couple of Atlas Stones…
They also supply chalk…
The thing is I didnt start going there for any of that stuff… Its just close to my place and the cheapest gym in the area…
I workout at the air force base I live on. They have tons of shit. We have a lot of guys that come in from all the branches to workout. A lot of big guys movin a lot of iron, expecially from the af powerlifting team. Makes it a really inspirational place to workout.
Extreme Fitness in Toronto… I manage the new PT business and Nutrition dept at the Danforth location (hence the name)… our director was at one point the Ontario powerlifting champion (female) she could rep 315 on the bench for 10… I forget her max
At the other location I worked at, one of our trainers coached the recently crowned Canadian champ (Mike van Wyck - look him up *plug) our newest IFBB pro… he’s a trainer at yet another location… their training partner just won the Ontario BB crown so he should be going for the nationals next year… I trained with the 4th guy in the group earlier this year for a few months, I learned a ton
The gyms aren’t quite what you would call “hardcore” though… they are commercial, but the equipment and aesthetics are great…
Graffiti on the walls, loud music, can spit on the floor drop weights and yell, deadlift platform, monolift, a separate room for lower body, and NO BOSU.
Oh on tuesday I watched one guy rack pull 815x3 and watched another guy squat 595 raw all in 90 min span I was there. People were cheering. All hell broke loose.
