I’ve known people that didn’t train and he was 5’7 and he could slam dunk. Does this mean we shouldn’t train and just rock up and slam dunk?!
There is no real relation between Snatch and Deadlift strength. Otherwise a much higher % of the PowerLifters would have decent Snatch by default. The technique and speed is what limits a person who has comes from a PL background. Lack of strength in the positions that they are not use to.
I would like to see that guy Snatch 90Kg. A Power Snatch is different and doesn’t require the same amount of technique and balance.
I’m not sure where I fit into this “debate”. It takes hard work and a lot of it. I’ve made pretty decent progress though I expect for it to start slowing down soon, otherwise I’ll be in the Olympics by 2012 (kidding).
You can see my progression through my youtube videos (and original comments/critiques from koing himself dating back to the beginning of my lifting):
SNATCH PROGRESS:

Having a World-Class coach has been extremely valuable and I’ve worked, and am working, pretty damn hard. If there’s one thing I’ve seen in many beginners is a failure to develop a real feel for their bodies in the lifts. They look technical enough, even excessively so, but fail to really put much into the bar (at least not what they’re capable of). Lifters can’t separate their technique from their speed and strength with these lifts. I’m still a work in progress, though, and certainly no expert.
Good Luck!
And a special thanks to Koing for his help and keen, critical eye!

Hey,Koing,whats your vertical jump?
I ask you cause I wnat to compare numbers and get some insight into power demands for a 100 kg snatch.
I have 60 cm vertical at 90 kg bw.

A 90kg power snatch is not the same as a 90kg squat snatch. Being able to power snatch 90kg doesn’t mean you can even squat snatch an empty bar. If you want to go down the “someone I know route”, a mate of mine pulled 240kg last week, powersnatched 82.5kg after about an hour of coaching, but falls on his arse with a 50kg squat snatch. Not that it means anything, because deadlift and snatch strength have little relation to each other.
100kg locked out and held in the rock bottom position of a squat snatch feels a hell of a lot different to 100kg pulled off the floor to just below the waist.
I just want to snatch 100 kilos. It doesnt matter to me whether its done by me via power snatch or technical catching in the deep receiving position.

a strongman just joined my club, and he, on his first day, snatched 70 and powersnatched 75. He has a 200kg ATG squat and a 600+ deadlift. He will be snatching 100+ in a few months with technique work. Cleaning 95 already.
But DL is NOT a clean pull so imo that shit dont matter
Our strongman nearly qualified for Britains Strongest man. Just half a point out
His best in comp were 95Kg Power Snatch and 135Kg PC & PJ. He only trained OLifts once a week and had flexibility issues, that were improving though.
Does your strongman have any flexiblity issues? If he can get in to a good Snatch position he will be WELL A HEAD! He should improve very fast if he doesn’t have any flexiblity issues and if he trains 2-3x a week.

75cm or 29.5inches. It isn’t some over inflated number. I can plate jump 138.5cm also because I’m supple.
A 100Kg Snatch isn’t too bad for me but I’m quite a lot stronger then I need to be to do it.
The short end of the stick is that you will have to be stronger depending on your technique. The better your technique the faster you will Snatch 100Kg. If you POWER SNATCH 100Kg you will be a bit of a beast imo. It would take ages to Power Snatch 100kg imo unless you relly break down the technique.
Keep training and following your coach and you will get there

At least 12Kg a year on your lift is doable for at least 3yrs imo. 12kg steady for each lift per year is a very obtainable target if your OLifting 3x a week.

I dont have a coach unfortunately.I get some free advice from a few lifters(about 5 of them in total of what I saw) and a few retired old lifters.
I know a weightlifter from Samoa who competed in the ‘88 Olympics as a wrestler and in 2000 as an olympic weightlifter. Also has compete in battle canoe, volleyball, etc, etc. He’s a freakin’ beast!

As long as your getting your lifts watched and you get comments that goes a long way.

He should go far when he picks up the technique to a point where it is nearly automatic and he can use all of his strength
Should at least start C&J his 5RM sometime and start working towards his 3RM front squat
Koing
he front squatted 130kg for a double 2 weeks ago while going “light.” 120 for 5’s on the backsquat for ‘light’ work. And while weighing 198lbs! If he sticks around and stays with it and gets the technique down, he might be able to clean 150-160 next year, if not more.
and we know he has some decent overhead strength, he push press 280lbs for an axle press! I’m really excited to see how he progress’s.

Training 2 times a day for 6 days a week=thats 12 training session a week…lets say every training session lasts about 2 hours=24 training hours a week.
12 training sessions=4 olympic lifting sessions
+4 gymnystic sessions+
4 wrestling sessions
