My Baby Got Sauce

Interesting belt discussion. I have the same tapered belt as Snapper, but its really the maximum width that I can get between my ribs and my hipbone. My legs are long, my torso not so much.

As for the trainer-guy crossing lines, I’d suggest you deal with that upfront. Especially if the line crossing involved any touching. Just wearing an iPod and avoiding the contact might not do it.

If your meet is this weekend, good luck! I’ll look forward to hearing about it.

Love those quotes, man.

Also, single leg deadlifting gives me horrible anxiety because I am 100% incapable of keeping my balance for more than 3 reps.

For doing them, I salute you!

Missed a little. lol. I would go with 115-120 for your opener. But, you can go off what Wendler suggested, and what I did. Use 85% of what you want to put up that day. That way the confidence boost of how fucking easy it was helps propel you to a nice PR.

For the format, I use this. Today, Josh had me shrug 355 for 12 reps for 3 sets. So, I write it out like 355x12x3.

True speak Lula, Im writing those down.

Always interesting reading the methodology of how people pick their meet attempt numbers. I’ve changed strategies over time. And my methodology is different for each lift. Experimentation is the key to success in this department.

First I love Scarlet or Blood

Two: MEET MEET MEET!!!

Finally I like the quotes you added, situations of discomfort allow you to grow as a person. As children we are always confronted with new things, scary things and our brains and persons grow like crazy.

Kimba-Meet is next weekend, I’ll tuck the good luck away until then, thanks! And thanks for the advice on the gym trainers. No touching involved, but I do need to learn to face things head on rather than avoid them.

Spock: I definitely lose balance-I consider it part of the process, but my butt’s sore today–so I think they’re definitely worth it. I salute you. For being awesome.

Koub: All morning I thought you meant opening with a 115-120 dead lift and for the life of me couldn’t figure out why. Now I realize you’re talking about bench. I think I am going to open with 120…my thought now is to open with something I can do for 3-5 reps; second attempt do my gym max; third attempt what i’ve attempted and failed at in the gym. Of course, this could all change depending on how I’m feeling.

Matty: hi

Snap: I look forward to the day I have a little of that experience under my belt.

Mainy: So far the belt’s name is Neglected. Or possibly, $100 Wall Hanging. Because that’s all the action it’s gotten lately. Soon belt, soon.

I had a minor freak out last night–worrying that my training hasn’t been enough, I didn’t get enough volume in this past week, I don’t remember how to squat, blah blah. And then I remembered that this is fun. And nobody’s paying me or forcing me to do this, and I should just relax. So-that’s what I’m doing (or…attempting). But be warned, there will be an influx of motivational videos and quotes this week.

What I’m thinking for next week:

Squat: 185/225/235
Bench: 120/135/145
Dead: 185/225/245

I’m not sure if it’s foolish to aim for PRs for the third attempt; I have a bad history of taking risks just because it’s more fun than not. That’s how I accidentally ended up with bright orange hair in college, and a couple compression fractures in my spine when I was a kid. It’s also why I don’t gamble (SURE put it ALL in!) I also don’t necessarily want to have guys pulling bars off me left and right. I guess we’ll just see.

aiming for prs on the 3rd set is what most people do - and there wouldn’t be a safer environment with 3 guys spotting you. I say go for it.

ahahaha. no, not deadlift. your numbers look really solid. definitely great numbers to get started off with in the books.

your training has been spot on. no major injuries, and the weights kept going up. aim for the PR’s and break them. taking risks make us better. I guarantee each and every person in this thread has done some stupid shit (I’ve lost count myself), and are still here today. that is why we are here, to push ourselves even more. go to the meet and beat yourself, not beat up yourself.

YES!! Love this!

Dude, you’re going to fucking kill it at the meet! No stress.

Going ultra raw!! Yeaaaaah buddy!

First - everyone gets a little nervous. You will probably also get nervous waiting on your first attempt, hoping you dont drop the bar or embarrass yourself or something, this is normal - but it will all go away after you hit your squat opener. After that it’s like “wait why was I nervous? It’s just lifting, I’ve done this a thousand times. MORE!”

Second - To echo nlmain, meets are good for PRs. You really can’t replicate the environment in a gym, your adrenaline is on a different level. My strategy was to start with a weight I’ve hit several times in a gym, take a 2nd attempt near my gym PR, then go for a significant-but-not-unrealistic PR on attempt 3 (I used the 5/3/1 PL meet prep and set my goals at the most I thought I could possibly lift on my best day).

Most importantly - don’t forget to HOLD YOUR LOCKOUT on bench and squat. Wait for the rack command before you move a muscle. It was a struggle for me not to rack my squats immediately, out of habit.

Gotta go for those PRs! Echoing what everyone says its the time to do it, and the safest time as well. Fuck it shoot for the stars land on the moon, I would rather fail then leave knowing you could hit more…

Love the quotes!

I heard this one the other day - Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself. George Bernard Shaw

Your meet attempts will need to be in kilos. So they won’t be the exact numbers you have outlined. There will be a kilo chart available.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

I adore this. I always say people should be more aware of the power they have to create themselves - their own mythos, their story.

I hadn’t thought of it like this, I’ll see how the lifts feel that day, otherwise, all systems are go!

You often come out with gems of wisdom like this, thanks. I think that’s why I was surprised when you said you were 25 (26?) in Nadia’s log.

Haha! I know, there’s an “equipment check” and I was thinking to myself…the only equipment I may need to check is like, a tampon. Ha! I appreciate your enthusiasm and support. So much. Thanks!

Dropping the bar never even crossed my mind UNTIL NOW. SHIT! (jokes) Thanks, I am hopeful once I get under the bar all nerves will be erased. I could count on that with a routine with gymnastics, but that was at least like, 30 seconds. A squat takes what, 5? Good call on listening for the command on squat and bench. I had a bikram yoga phase so I’m hoping that all the ‘don’t move until you are told to move’ instruction will pay off.

To the moon I go. Thanks so much for your encouragement, I’ve seriously called upon that when I’m needing it.

I love this, thank you. I am working on it.

The questions I have are kind of silly. Here are a couple:

  1. The t-shirt. Does it have to be plain? (i.e. no writing on it?)
  2. Do I give just opening numbers when I weigh in, or do I give them all of my attempts…but these attempts can change during the meet?
  3. Once I touch the bar, do I need to start lifting? I know this is dumb, but in gymnastics (as you know, with your daughter) once you touch the beam/bars…your routine has started, and I can’t get that mentality out of my head and am afraid I’ll rush.
EDIT: 4. Is chalk usually provided, or BYO?

…I think that’s all for now.

THANKS!

i think its a usapl meet right? Here is a little handbook that will answer most all of your questions. As far as chalk goes, never a bad idea to have your own just in case.

You give numbers at weight in, have kgs ready, also remember to get your rack height for squat and bench. Opening attempts can change up to the 5 min mark before the lifting starts. Second/third can not be changed once submitted and you have 1 min to submit 2/3 after your lift. Exceptionon is the 3rd attempt dead, can be changed. Generally the meet staff is really helpful to first time competitors.

While this meet stuff is super cool, did you have a date you were going to tell us about?

Wow lots o’ wisdom floating around here, just stopping by to say hi & a quick catch up.
