i really believe a smaller lifter gets more from a (non tapered) belt than a larger lifter (if they can wear it without bruising ribs or hip bone) due to the fact that they have more of their abd area covered.
And, hence, probably why my coach wants me to go back to the full-size belt for squatting. I guess I should try it since I know that you know the science behind all this.
The support of the spine is what I feel the most with a belt, especially with the OH press, Im actually still practicing with pushing my stomach out with the squat so it helps me there as well. I just sweated like crazy and my belt is as pliable as tin foil now!

I didn’t explain well. Most people who request racks in grip to the collars. You’re right. But there are also people like me who grip narrow but do better with the racks in because otherwise I bang the weights on the uprights during the walkout simply because I struggle a bit with stability during the liftoff and steps back. Canting the racks in gives me more wiggle room between the weights and the uprights and has resolved that banging problem for me. I should have said that racks in doesn’t work for people with a moderately wide grip. Thanks for clarifying that.
Interesting. How high do you set your racks? Are you squatting the bar up a few inches from the rack to your top position (before walking back), or are you tip-toeing the bar out of the rack? I just can’t picture hitting the weights on the side of a competition rack… a real squat rack or power rack, sure.
I’ve never actually seen a rack in so I can’t tell lula if it would be in the way of her grip, all I know is it’s generally used by people who grip it olympic style.
hijack done, sorry lula. God damn your log is popular lately though. If it were me, I’d call the belt “Big Red”. I did not win any creative writing contests in grade school.

Rack height is set so that the bar is a few inches above nipple level.

Squatting the bar up a few inches. But that’s not when I hit the uprights. It’s always during the walkout.
Sorry to hijack Lula, but here’s a vid of me squatting with racks set in. You’ll see that they are canted slightly in at the top as opposed to going straight up.

Sorry for hijack, snap do you see how much side to side movement your upper body does during the set up? I assume that is why you smack the rack.
Don’t apologize, I love it when the smart kids come out to play.
I have that same side-to-side movement that makes me hit the rack. I just checked out the clip in Germanone’s log about how to set up a squat and think that rather than slide the first foot straight back, I step it out to the side. Regardless, I still may request the racks in since I don’t trust myself to change that habit under stress at this point.
Thanks for posting that, Snap. I do love watching you squat.
Germanone-if you are near Up, that means you are close(ish) to me, and we should maybe talk. I really appreciate your log, there is a lot of really good knowledge in there.
Thanks for all of the belt info as well-I’ve learned so much the last couple pages!
Git: You had me cracking up over here over each of the name suggestions. It’s a toss up between Scarlett and Bortia (for the LOLs). My first thought was to name it Frank, so these are all a step up.
KMCNYC: Thanks for stopping in. I hear there is a famous foot stomp named after you.
SJC: Hijack away. And I equate the increase of traffic in here to hearing the squealing of tires before a car crash. It’s impossible to look away, it’s just human nature to want to watch the inevitable carnage.
Benching tonight. Until then I leave you with this:
When rotissering a chicken, it is not, I repeat, NOT a suggestion to tie up the wings and legs with string. This is absolutely necessary. Also? Ovens can and WILL burn holes in the arm of your favorite sweatshirt, so don’t stick your hands into the oven all nilly willy like.

That vid G1 posted was AWESOME! Going to start calling him Gold1 cause he just lays those golden nuggets for all of us to digest.
It’s amazing how TIGHT you can stay with those 3 small steps.
**Got a lift off and practiced benching according to the calls. Tweaked my shoulder on one of the 135s
**I’m tempted to open with 135…but I think I should play it safe/smart and open 115-120 and then bump it up for the second round. ??
Yeah I would agree, for your first meet the butterflies are gonna be fluttering so possibly the first attempt is something just to get under your belt and ease any nerves you may have. BUT on the otherhand you hit 135 for a triple so maybe that should be your starting point. Ive also heard your bench attempts should go 92% 98& and 103% of your 1rep max. Wow lotta fucking help I am…

Im here for you Homey!
Ok I’m writing my sets out wrong. I did 3 singles. What is that then…135x3x1? or 3x1 135#
No you had it right, Im polish so Im a little bit dense! So go with the weight you can do a triple for, possibly like I said with the percentages? I do believe getting that first attempt up is important for nerves…you know me being a PL veteran with all of one PL meets under my belt
Too funny ddot, Lula it’s an all or nothing deal. No up…no G sorry lol. But you have time to work on her. Since you guys are practically neighbors feel free to ask any meet questions, or you can pm me. Been to a meet or 2.
