My Baby Got Sauce

Lula: A meet sounds like a great idea. You will excel. Just gotta bring that DL up to match your spectacular bench and squat. AND, my little bar specialist, you should be great at the dl. It’s just like a kip. Bar at mid shin, arms straight, core tight, engage your lats, and pull that bar close and up your body!

Glad to see you got under the bar on the bench too. That’s a pretty solid bench, not surprisingly. I bet you could pull more than you’re giving yourself credit for too, AFTER you get your leg right(er). I won’t preach, I’m just sayin’. (May is plenty of time for you to let your leg heal up/get fixed and still put in some decent heavy(er) deadlift training. Okay, I’m done!)

The things that jumped out at me from today’s conditioning are that 1) Goodness you did that early in the day, and 2) Smart comments like what?! I’ve had people ask what I was doing/my girls were doing when we did them, but nothing smart. laugh You could ask him his maxes for a gas, and either mock them directly or do a strength to weight comparison and mock him for that. Or just keep training harder and looking better than him/his clients and know what time it is.

Hey man, Mother Nature gots to flex sometimes too!

My sentiments exactly.

Often people who excel at bench struggle with DL.

Yup, generally because people with arms like a T-Rex tend to do well at bench but long limbs are better for deads. I have short arms and a long back - not a good combo.

Go for that meet and good luck!

Kimba: Thank you so much! Agile 8 I saw in Pixiethrower’s log and checked out. It’s foam rolling/mobility for the lower body. Here’s the link

mainy: thank you! And you may be right…technically, my deload was 2 weeks ago, but I sort of ramped things up that week with other lifts so I don’t think i completely got the purpose of the deload :stuck_out_tongue: I am going to see how I feel at the end of this week and my just re-deload (?) next week and start this cycle fresh after that.

Nadia: You’re right, my deads suck, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why it’s so far behind the squat. In my mind, it should be easier, because it’s just the second half of the squat, really. I just love that you put it into gymnastic-speak for me, and that actually makes a lot of sense to think of it that way! I used to kip like nobody’s business!! (again, I seriously need to find an open gym around here!)

Kristoph: I thought the same thing about possibly being able to do more than I’ve been trying…so last Friday I was messing around with my buddy and tried pulling 200 (stupid, i know), and it wouldn’t even budge. not a bit. so, I don’t know.

Yes-it was early. Sleeping issues? I gots 'em. For the life of me, sleep isn’t happening past 4 am (which makes staying out past bar time even more impressive, no?). Rather than make my downstairs neighbors hate me even more (I imagine a voodoo doll every morning I am up “stomping” around), I just head to the gym. I’m getting melatonin tonight to see if that helps.

The trainer was making comments like “if you want to carry something heavy around, we’ve got lots of things that need moving! har har har.” SmartASS comments, not anything actually smart.

Ok ok, I’ll take it easy on mother nature. I am actually looking forward to snowboard/xc skiing season.

snap: Thanks for the input on the form. And I never would have thought of a correlation between bench and deadlifts. My hypothesis has been that deads are a relatively new movement for me, whereas bench and squat I’ve done since college. And I like training deads, so I don’t know. Frustrating.

Cal: I never gave much thought to the length of my arms/torso/legs. I Should measure that and see, very interesting!

lula, thanks for the link! That looks like something I need to be doing.

I have long arms and long legs. Deadlifts are my best lift and squats hate me. I think leverages have alot to do with lifting success/struggles.

I was totally in lurker mode, but I just have to come in here and say that your squats are ridic!!!

Holy canoli! I’m super impressed. They looked great (and yes, you hit depth to me).

And sheesh, you’re physique is beyond impressive! Gorgeous!

Also lots of great info in here. Why don’t I check on you more regularly?! I’m silly. Your log is the shiz!

Great work, woman. Keep killing it!

Good form  I don’t think anyone can blame you for getting a little wobbly under that weight. Have you ever considered getting olympic lifting shoes? They have a solid sole with a slightly elevated heal that gives you a more stable base to push off of. None of the loss of power transfer that you get with regular shoes. The majority of the guys I lift with wear them and really like them. Just a thought.

Glad you liked the Agile 8! If you’re ever looking for a good upper body/shoulder workout I recommend the Simple 6 routine by DeFranco. Here’s a link:

Masch-thanks for stopping in and for all the lovin’!

Pixie: After I stopped running seriously I decided I was going to take at least a couple years to only buy shoes that were ‘cute’ as opposed to functional (yes, i know EXACTLY how that sounds, thankyouverymuch!). I’ll look into the oly shoes though, thanks for the suggestion  And thanks for the DeFranco video (he’s a little hottie, isn’t he?! That will definitely be added to the rotation as well!

*Lost my chutzpah this morning. Everyone on campus decided they wanted MY rack and MY pull up bar. Literally every time I turned around, what I was planning on doing next was taken.
*Still feeling beat up. Plan is to listen to sensible me (she is such a wet blanket sometimes) and deload next week. I know the weights to use, but what sort of accessory work/metabolic work is ok to do? I have to find that balance I think.

OMG! DeFranco is SUCH a cutie. No wonder I’m always doing his programs

And yes, I’m totally with you - I can’t stand when people get all up on my equipment! Its MINE, MINE, MINE!! Also, I get so annoyed when people do non-racky things in the squat rack. Like, why? Go do that somewhere else, thank you.

I’m starting to have a fondness for Millies. I’ve only started doing them, but I dig them. Especially after I read somewhere that you should think of the movement as if all your power is coming from your feet and going all the way through your body. Its kinda special in a thundercats sort of way. Anyways, I’ve been doing mid-range reps and I’d be interested to see what my 1RM is…But yeah, 80x3 is stout! Nice.

Lol @ your wet blanket self! I feel ya.

how cool that you met a strongman woman. a meet sounds like a great idea

yeah… i heard short torso / long limbs is good for deadlift - but not a great deal else lol. short limbs / longer torso is good for bench and squat. apparently it is to do with the range of motion. if you have shorter legs you have less distance to take the bar in squatting it below parallel. if you have shorter arms you have less distance to take the bar in bench. if you have longer arms then that helps deadlift because it is apparently easier to lock it out. i got long arms and i never have trouble locking it out. struggle more with moving it that first inch off the floor (since my legs are weak and i’m trying to minimize the works my lower back / hip extension does).

Ahahahaha! You’re welcome  Thought a little bit of hottie motivation would help

Bottom line is that short arms benefit the bench. Short legs benefit the squat. And long arms with short everything else benefits the DL. I do not believe that limb length has anything to do with DL lockout; it’s just a ROM issue. Sticking points on DLs can be individual. But the sticking point usually is off the floor in sumo stance and higher up or at lockout with conventional.

Masch-Ugh! Doing non-racky things in the rack (especially yes, when it’s mine!) is in my top 3 worst gym offenses. The calf raises and wrist curls are what get me the most…WHY!?!

aha! I love that-special in a thundercat sort of way. Go for that 1RM and report back!

Alexus: It was a strongman MAN! (hubba hubba) Something about a guy who could toss me over his shoulder like it ain’t no thang gets me every time!

Pixie: hottie motivation clearly does it for me

About the arms/leg length-I’ll have to do some measurements. I believe my legs are short (see also: stubby), I’m not sure about my arms, but I think I have a longish torso.

Damn physics, the bane of my existence!

Rest day today, but! Inspiration:

My body tells me no
But I won’t quit
Cause I want more

took me a year to find it again, but here is an interesting article on if sumo or conventional is better for your torso. i fall in between, and prefer conventional. i can’t build the rage with sumo. also, #1 and #2 in the world (Magnusson and Bolton) pull conventional, if that means anything. lol. if you want to watch some badass pulling this Saturday, go to Night of the Living Deadlift site. just Google it. think it’s actually being aired on ESPN2. im going to watch the stream, since I’ll be stuck at work.

http://articles.elitefts.com/articles/training-articles/choosing-conventional-or-sumo-based-on-your-bone-structure/

Nice find. According to that I should be pulling sumo. My torso is well over 50% of my height. Doesn’t surprise me, though. My best friend growing up had three inches on me but when we sat down I was way taller. Curse my stumpy legs.

53% on the arms and 49% on the torso - long&long which suits both styles. Explains why I deadlift way more than I squat.

Thanks Koub!

koub-that’s an awesome link, thanks! every time you come in here you drop all sorts of knowledge, I appreciate it.

Cal-stumpy leg sistahs unite!

mainy-I’m just about the same percentages as you, but can squat more than I dead. meh?

I think I’m sticking with conventional for awhile. I’m too new at this game to go changing the rules. Plus having perma-bruises on my shins makes me feel all bad ass.

Training

morning:

up & under hip mobility
famers walks
med ball slams (these will become a staple)
box jumps
incline walk

afternoon (aka hate training)

defranco’s mobility stuff

deloading deads
barx10
95x5-TWINGE
115x5-twinge, pissed off
135x5-see above

I thought I was past the behind the knee thing, but even on light weight I tweaked it again. I took my anger out in accessory work with sets of 25. Meh.

Bent DB row
Pull ups (NOT 25 of these)
Hang cleans
ER
Speed squats

*The twinge makes me nervous because the pain reached my ankle last week-signaling (to me) that it was getting worse down the chain…then just this morning I thought it was finally centralizing to just where the sciatic comes out in the glutes. I’m working the clinic tomorrow so I’l talk to the PT and recheck things.

*Lost a small, but important part of my soul at a baby shower yesterday. Hanging with my old college friends always makes me feel like I’m ‘less’ because i didn’t do the college, get a job, get a husband, buy a house, have a kid, buy a mini-van route. For a brief moment I let it get me down, then I realized that I’m actually quite happy with my life, the fact that I can waste a day doing whatever I want…and the fact that the word ‘hemorrhage’ has never crossed my lips, in relation to myself.

*got the rest of my stuff from the ex yesterday too. overall, a fun day.

*Really liked the med ball slams and am going to look for a punching bag in town for some early morning work. I’m pretty sure I could have my way with one of those.

*training sunday afternoons during packer season means it’s me and the foreign exchange students. With the attitude i had in there today, easy to say I won’t be becoming an ambassador any time soon.

And others are quiet envious you
(sometimes at least)

Hope that knee is ok!
