The Judo tournament yesterday was a lot of fun. Took third in my weight class. Won 2, lost 2. My bracket was tough. We were running on 2 mats, and I ended up fighting 4 rounds in 15 minutes. I lost my first match, but my coach said it should have been mine. I threw my opponent, but the ref gave him a wazari because of the way that we landed. Then he north/southed me (worst position ever!) until time ran out.

I won my 2nd match with an ipon… single leg takedown with a foot sweep. I won my 3rd match on points… I scored a wazari with a bench throw with 5 seconds left in the round. I lost my 4th match on points. My opponent dropped me with a single leg takedown then pinned me. My arms somehow ended up in his gi which left me unable to figure out a way to escape.

There were several opportunities that I missed and I got seriously gasses, so I know there are some things to work on for the state championships in Oct. But overall, I was pleased with how things went.[/quote]

Congratulations on your wins, Steve-o! Good luck in October!

Hey, thanks!

Hey guys looking for some input, for the last couple of months I have been taking boxing at a local gym 3x a week and lifting weights 3x a week. However for the next two months I am going to be out of state and will not be boxing, will still have access to a gym.

My plan is switch over to a plan for strength and max endurance so when I get back I can incorporate the boxing back in and be better prepared for a more intense training shedule. I am not too focused on size but, I figure with strength comes muscle.

My question is what kind of weekly schedule would be best for my goals? My stats are 5’10.5, 175lbs, I am not sure about my BF, it is low enough that I can see my abs and the separation in my quads. I know this might not be the best thread to post in since I won’t have any real training for 2 months but, I read Training Hub 1 and saw that most were incorporating the strength and conditioning.

I’ve just got into martial arts and I want to get in good shape for it while learning basics. Do you think I would be overtraining if I did energy systems/conditioning/gpp or whatever you call it every day along with weights training and mma basics alternating? Plus one rest day.
Conditioning- sprints, circuits involving tyre flips/sledge drag etc., heavy bag intervals, bodyweight circuits
Weights- compound moves and advanced bodyweight moves
Mma basics- kickboxing and ju jitsu with some muay Thai and wrestling.

My training history is various strength routines eg. starting strength, regular running and circuits

Also I will include core or grip in my weights

I’m sure your new gym has a jumprope and a mirror. Do plenty of jumping rope and plenty of shadowboxing, and you’ll be able to at least maintain the skill you’ve built until you can get back in the gym.

As far as your lifting, you should clarify a little more. You want more strength, but max endurance? Those generally don’t go hand in hand if you’re talking about ME strength. Max endurance strength, if that’s what you want, doesn’t tend to go with gaining size. I know you said you don’t really care about size, but you seemed like you wouldn’t mind (who would)… so I think you need to figure out really what you want to do first. Then we can help you better.

Yes, probably too much. Did you not read through the thread before you posted? Did you not see how WRATHfight69 got chewed out for claiming such a full on schedule? Did you you not see that he said he’s been at it for a while now and he feels like a walking zombie?

In my opinion, I’d completely drop a day of conditioning/weights to give yourself an extra day of rest.
Especially if you’re only just starting out.

i didnt think there was any chewining goin on, the guys who responded had very valid points no one answered my original quetion though so i just took last sat off to chill withm my son n play with my daughter and i feel fine. And for those of you in my situation try makin your family part of your goal i take my gf and my oldest daughter with me all the time 2 my practices and as long as they stay out of the way my coaches dont care and ya i shortened my schedual up a little bit im mou only grapplin 7 hours a week instead off instead of 12 so that helps a little plus i hate t.v

Yeah but I thought mine was less work then his so it might be alright. I’ll try it with a day midweek off and see how it goes from their

Well ok, maybe not chewed out. But regardless, the point was made that the schedule was too full on. I’m glad you’ve taken an extra day off. I’m glad that you’ve dropped some grappling too, I really hope that it helps your recovery, and gives you more time for the family.
I believe I answered your original question fairly comprehensively, I gave several idea of how to cut out some work while still achieving your goals. But, you know, whatever, you’ve come up with a reasonable solution anyhow.

Needforspeed- Yeah, your proposed work load was probably a little less. But my point still stands, I believe, look at what others are doing. A lot of the time the maxim “less is more” can be appropriate. I guess it depends on how long you are doing each of your proposed activities-
Exactly how many days of weights, how long spent on conditioning, how long do the mma classes run for? What else do you do with your time-
are you a student? or work a job? Have you been lifting weights and doing energy systems work? For how long? How many days a week/hours?

Anyhow, on the surface, it looks like too much to me. There’s no harm is starting with a little less, if it gets a 6-9 weeks in and you feel like you can handle more, prioritize your goals and add extra work.

Peace

Sorry what i meant is that I would like strength and conditioning. I figure that a strength routing would get me stronger with out leaving me sore for days. Howveer I have never followed a strength routine or incorporated conditioning into a weekly schedule. Pretty much. I don’t like telling people how to schedule workouts and all because my own is so all over the place… but Enamait gives the best info out there.

You probably just made yourself very unpopular. Don’t be surprised if no-one ever offers you any kind of advice in the future, if that’s how you’re going to receive it-

God forbid that anyone actually give you the advice you were looking for.
You obviously think that you’re the expert. You obviously came here to boast bullshit schedules so that everyone would bow down and worship your awesome he-manliness, sorry that didn’t happen.

Good luck with the training, I’m sure we’ll see you, UFC champ, no time.

As for expert oh hell no im goin for personal trainer certification in december but we’ll see about that them but i do know how my body works better than some wise guy tryn sound like a genius on a keyboard!

Um, wow, I thought it was really generous of kmcnyc to go through the trouble to write all that stuff out, and that it was sound advice. Anyway…

Did an hour of sparring this morning with GB & an hour in the afternoon with G. I am battered & sore, but for once, they kind of are, too. YAY! I’m finally starting to see a little progress. G surprised me by picking me up & running across the room with me, dropped me in a big pile of pads & trapped me there shoved against the wall & pads. Surprise rape scenario. He was driving hard & I had a hard time getting my knees together to shove him off as my shin guards were getting in the way, but I’d have to deal with obstacles if it were real, so I have to deal with that. Relentless saw what we were doing & ran to get the video camera. He promises he’ll send it to me - if its good I’ll post it, as I have a feeling I’m doing some different stuff than y’all are. I got scolded repeatedly for not stomping his head in as a finisher. I said, "he’s “unconscious, look at him!” They said, “What if he’s faking! He just tried to rape you! Stomp him! WTF!”

Awesome thing happened today: Just before the afternoon session a guy came in to inquire about MMA classes. I asked him if he’d trained before. He said he’d trained for about 9 years. Okay. I asked if he concentrated on BJJ or standup. Long pause. “Well,” says he, “I pretty much consider myself a 7th degree black belt in MMA”. True fucking story. I politely said, “Oh, well, that’s great. Why don’t you come to the 7:45 MMA class? It’s free.” He said he would. No show, I think, they guys are on their way to pick me up to go to a new sports bar, I’ll find out then.
