Jay Or Brad?: Part II

This is my goal

I think Serge Nubret looked (looks?) damn good.

I like the “classic” (40’s-60’s) look.

People from Reg Park and Bill Pearl, to John Grimek, George Eifferman, Clarence Ross, etc.

I’m also with the classic bodybuilder physique. This is what I strive to look like. Here’s George Eiferman early 1950’s.

This is the physique i inspire. But unfortunately i’m stuck with Batman’s physique.

“VAN DAMME IS BACK IN SHAPE! HEAH!!”

Well…I knew that some hack would send some “it’s more important to be yourself” PM…my reply was “Can you read?”

First and formost I’m trying to develop the “best” physique for me, my genetics and my bodytype…I stated that…

However, it’s disingenuous to think that others can’t (or shouldn’t?) motivate us…or sort of give us a “blueprint” to strive for…

That’s all this thread is about…

…and if that somebody is Popeye…that’s cool too!

What many seem to be unable to realize is that you have to have a solid visual “real” goal in mind when you first get started. It is what gives you something to shoot for instead of being one of those who wastes 3-5 years looking exactly the same because they started this with “I just want to tone and cut a little, I don’t really have a goal”.

My goals have changed over the years. Once I reach one, I set a new one. I remember my original goal being to only weigh about 185lbs straight out of high school. I reached that and set it higher.

For some reason, people try to make bodybuilding different than any other goal in life when it shouldn’t be. If your goal is to be a lawyer, do you say “I just want to go to law school, I don’t really want to be a good lawyer, I just want to get by”, or do you look up to people who have already done this and been successful? If the young lawyer in school does look up to someone who has been successful at this career, does that mean they are not being themselves?

Bodybuilding is no different. You mentally set a goal and proceed to reach it. That doesn’t mean you have low self esteem. If anything, once reached, it proves to yourself that you had the drive and courage to reach something and you succeeded.

Just like in the other thread about being big and being unhealthy, people somehow look at bodybuilding and try to find the worse mental images to relate it to. They wouldn’t dare do the same to the doctor who gives up his social life to pursue his career. We have had bodybuilding’s main “poster child” grow up, become a movie star, and one of the most popular governors in the world…yet some will still see bodybuilding as a worthless pursuit. “It is more important to be yourself”? Of course it is. It is even better to see just how good “yourself” can be.

Prof X:

As always…amazing insights, my friend…

I really think that some took the post as some “esteem” issue or something (like you alluded to…)

That couldn’t be furthur from the truth…

Quite frankly, there are other guys AND gals who have done this “physique thing” better than I have…yea, yea, yea…part is genetics…but guess what? Some are just BETTER at it!!

Like you said, Prof…those whom have been BETTER at it really help me set that “mental Goal…”

Thanks, Brother!

Hey…let’s get some more thoughts and pics!

If that’s Professor X in his Avitar I want to look like him.

I’d say Franco for me, not that I could ever get to the kind of strength he has/had but at 5’5" and 185lbs winning the olympia and looking damn good I think that at or just above that weight ripped would be ideal for me at 2" taller.

Dream dream lol[/quote]

He has the greatest torso in history! But his legs always made him look like a dwarf. (No offense my dwarvish friends)

haha its true but as theres not a whole lot I can do about my short legs I figure i’ll just do the best with what I have hell it could be worse and I could have chicken legs.

Something like this. Maybe even with a little more bodyfat.

And for me, I can look at Mufasa’s picture posts, or Prof X’s Eddie Abbrew, and say OK and move on, but you look at Franco or Viator and I just have to keep looking.

It isn’t like Serge Nubret should be overlooked either. I know personally, I base my goals on what I believe I can realistically get close to (those with similar genetic shape or builds). I know I don’t have the genetic shape of Serge Nubret therefore trying to shoot for that is a little misguided for me. That isn’t to take anything away from the greats like Franco or Viator. I just wanted to make the point of how important realism is when deciding a goal to shoot for. The goal is to be the best that you can, nothing more and nothing less.

Agree…

There are a LOT of people of varying bodytypes whom can help you set that “Mental Goal”…

For example…one of my favorite Bodybuilders of all time was the “original” Ron Colman (Ron Coleman!)

His pic is above. It would be great to say “Hey…I wanna’ look like Ron”…but we have much different bodytypes/genetics…

(By the way…how many of you have Posters in your Home Workout area or somewhere else in your home to motivate you?)

Another was the “Flexin’ Dutchman”, Barry DeMay…

He had that unique combination of size AND aesthetics…
