It's Bulking Season!

Intrigued by this… C_C, care to elaborate? Or anybody else that knows something about this? I’ve been consistently gaining weight but my strength numbers have definitely stalled.

I’m 5’9-5’10 and around 218 lbs. on an empty stomach in the morning. My diet is roughly 4200 cals - 140g Fat, 390g Carbs, 325g Protein (about 1.5g/lb bodyweight).[/quote]

HOW is this intriguing? Isn’t that the whole point of working out for all of these hours in the first place?

If you are a beginner and not gaining strength, you are doing it wrong. If you are advanced and literally expect a strength increase at every workout, you are delusional.

No one here knows your level of development without seeing a picture of you. Taking statements so literally that you miss the message is what is intriguing.

Edit: you just changed your avatar to what I am guessing is a pic of you and you are not a beginner. Obviously you need to act accordingly to the results you are getting…and if no extra muscle is coming along with that body weight gain, then you need to slow that gain down.

At your stage of development, I am surprised at the question.

You’re right. I missed that he was likely equating “gaining weight but not gaining strength so add protein” to “gaining weight but not muscle so add protein”. Looking for that new magic pill I guess. Thanks for helping me realize this was nothing new.

Hey guys, 2 quick questions.

#1) What do you guys do to stave off fat accumulation during your bulking? I’m well aware that with weight gain will come inevitable fat gain; however, i’m trying to mitigate the damage as I go through the bulk. Right now I’m walking at a 4mph pace for 30-45 min, 3 times a week.

#2) I try and bulk as cleanly as possible, but I won’t lie every now and then I order a whole Papa John’s pie, or will eat a whole pint of haagen-dazs in one sitting. I can’t help and think about what all these insulin spikes are doing to my body and if (or when) I should worry about thing like diabetes and whatnot.

Last weigh in: 181lbs, 10%bf. Goal (190lbs, hopefully after that i’ll shoot for 200)

  1. Carbs
  2. Nutrient timing
  3. Increased omega 3s
  4. Cardio

#2 isn’t a question.

If you’re worried about fat gain then maybe a pizza and a pint of ice cream is not the best idea.

Did I say I was worried about fat gain? In #1 I stated that I clearly accept that fat gain will come with the bulk, I just want to mitigate it (I wasn’t delusional and said that I wanted to gain 20 pounds with NO fat gain.) And #2 is a question. Your reading comprehension sucks.

Yeaaaaaaaaaa…

If you want to put on muscle, you have to eat more, and we all know a side effect of that is fat storage. Theres no way around it, eat more and accept the inevitable fat gain. TO minimize said gain, there are things you can do. Proper diet, proper timing, correct proportions and ratios, and proper supplementing (pairing something like CLAs and Carnitine can aid in fat metabolism). IF you are truly looking to put on some weight, id cut out the cardio and cut out the pints of ice cream. The cardio is dipping into energy you dont have to waste, as you still need a tremendous amount to build, and the ice cream is…well, its ice cream.

If you’re asking about how to avoid fat gain, I would say you’re worried about it. That’s not a bad thing. #2 is not a question because you did not use a question mark, and I my shitty comprehension cannot recognize questions without a QUESTION mark.

As to you’re prissiness, learn to take some ball busting. I didn’t say you wanted 0 fat gain, I said you didn’t seem to want too much. If you are worri… concerned about about fat gain and then post “I eat a pizza and a tub of ice cream” that should be the first place you look. Not eating an entire pizza and a tub of ice cream will help mitigate fat gain.

Other than that, don’t turn this thread into somewhere you cry about how insensitive I am to your desire to mitigate fat gain. PM me if you must.

A Pint of ice cream is 1,200 cals. Is there some reason those cals wouldn’t count? Why wouldn’t I want them if i’m “truly looking to put on some weight”? Or did you mean if i truly want to put on clean weight?

In the interest of being helpful:

You can only forcefeed your body past a certain point in terms of gaining muscle. If you truly cannot eat any more than you already are then maybe ice cream is for you. But, assuming you don’t need a crazy amount of calories to grow then there are better sources. Healthy oils in your shakes, more carbs peri workout, fattier meats, handful of nuts, peanut butter etc…

A pint of icecream is a different thing than say, eating 2 big hamburgers. The first one is emtpy calories with no protein, so there is no excuse to eat it during a bulk. The second one though, has a lot of fat and carbs, but a decent amount of protein (depending on the burger), so it should help more with gaining lbm.

I deal with this often. Someone comes up to me, asks me a question, and proceeds to listen to my response. They then will attempt to justify what they do, as if that would change the fact that they’re still wrong.

No i wouldnt call those calories, id call those Pints of Dumb. Calories are not Calories. There are different forms of utilization that occur. 1k calories of ice cream and 1k calories of rice, or bananas for that matter if you want to compare simple sugar to simple sugar, are two different worlds.

You yourself said that you want to stave off fat accumulation. A pint of ice cream is the antithesis to that. You also stated that you do 3 cardio sessions of 45min a week, im assuming you do this in a attempt to counter said “every now and then” binges of papa johns/pints of ice cream. Well not only would that cardio not prevent any sort of caloric damage you would do to yourself from these “every now and then” moments, but it would also hinder bulking.

I say it would hinder bulking because, aside from those “every now and then” moments, you said you eat relatively clean. Judging from your weight and bodyfat given, you may eat very clean, but you also eat very little. Pair that little intake with the amount of cardio you do and you get the time it will take for you to put on size, a long time for those of us too lazy to get out a calculator.

My posts are delayed right now so I can’t edit but… when I said if your calories are crazy then maybe ice cream is fine. I meant really crazy like 12,000 a day type of calories (which is likely not an issue for anyone here) and that even then I’m sure there are better options than a pint of ice cream.

I would rather you use a weight gainer than that. I am not a fan of empty calories…and yes, sugar and fat as a treat counts as empty calories.

I saw one weight gainer with 1300 cals in two scoops with 120gr of protein total…which is more than you can get in a 1lb steak. For someone looking to pout on muscle, of the two, which do you think is better?
