How'd They Do It Before Supps?

For those who haven’t realized: the above picture is my avatar these days. Frank Zane.

And shame on you for not knowing that.

MAk you sarcastic? Na it can’t be :)
Was it the admission of sarcasm that gave it away?

I need to work on that.

120 grams of insulin-spiking refined carbs, that will sure do wonders for your body composition

And always worrying about what a certain meal will do to your body composition will keep you forever small and weak.

it isn’t difficult for me to get 1000 calories in a meal from clean sources without a lot of preparation or cost so i think i’ll take that option instead of feeling like my blood flow is clogging everytime i bite that hamburger

I hear ya. I was just pointing out that no one needs to be so anal about avoiding some fast food once in a while. Of course I advocate healthy food over fast food but I also don’t over-react by getting the feeling like like my arteries are clogging if I eat a freaking cheeseburger. I mean, give me a break about THAT one.

Good point. Rocky’s trainer Mickey ate bacon and eggs daily his whole life and lived to be like 90 something.

Oh great so if it works for a fictional character in a film then it must be OK, I wonder what superman eats?

This thread has gone on for a long time without anyone mentioning genetics.

The BB that is shown in the first picture was genetically pre disposed to be big and stung, and he has worked hard in the gym and ate well to achieve his physique.

I know guys that look similar to that yet they do not use any supplements and they do not bust heir balls down the gym, some people are just lucky bastards and have large muscular physiques without much effort.

I was speaking of the guy in real life verges meridith. he was also in grumpy old men, perhaps you can get casted. And I think superman eats at fat burger.

Popeye ate nothing but spinach (I think he also ate Olive Oyl but I’ll save that for that other forum!) and he has puny biceps. I can’t explain the forearms though. Or can I?

Wimpy ate burgers (that he never paid for by the way) and looked like a fat, dumpy bastard.

It’s so hard to find good, reliable nutrition information from cartoons. You don’t know who to trust.

Getting it from somebody with no build is even worse. BTW do you think mighty mouse was on the ‘SPIKE’ drink?

Definately!

And maybe cheese made with Metabolic Drive?

Do you think we’re causing this thread to crash and burn?

Okay, let me just get a couple things off my chest.

1.) N.O.-Xplod is clearly the answer to a lot of people’s solutions. Look at Triple-H. He was a big, ugly wrestler with a pretty good physique. Now, he’s a big ugly wrestler who thinks he can act with an even BETTER physique! Anyone who thinks N.O. can’t do wonders for you is probably a dumbass, or a commie.

2.) ‘Mickey’s’ real name is Meredith Brooks. He’s a badass. Go watch Clash of the Titans.

3.) This thread is pretty much dead, clearly.

Newb, don’t even try to justify your actions with these people. They will never have the size/strength you have/will have.

Jealousy, I suppose.

I doubt its jelousy, eating clean and gaining allot of weight is allot harder than eating unclean and gaining allot of weight. I could see why people who gianed their weight by eating clean would have allot of reasons why eating unclean is really bad for you. Other wise the wouldnt be eating the way they are.

And when you get into a argument about something like this of course everyone is gonna go to the extreme to prove their point.

Anyway, this whole thing was a bit of a misunderstanding I think.

Reasoned, thought out post… very non asinine…

Olive was a prude.

What, you never saw the tag-team between Bluto and the Jeep?

Supps are not essential at all. But guess what: the elite bodybuilders of the 40s look like today’s average, reasonably dedicated gym rat. Wonder why?
for some gyms yes, but for most the “average, reasonably dedicated gym rat” doesnt look anywhere as muscular as elite bbers from the 1940’s such as the pic the op put up. Most of those current day gym rats look reasonably good, but not really up there with elites of the past imo.

But you’re right, that there are a lot more people who look like that now than there were back then.

Liver Pills…been around forever. Take a peak at the nutrient profile. Looks like some miracle pill, but it’s just dehydrated food. Supplements are just what their name suggests. They supplement your diet and training to make it as effective and efficient as possible.

Some “supplements” can likely be considered a complete waste of time and money, but there are some very effective ones as well. Vitamins and minerals, a fair amount of plant extracts like milk thistle, green tea and the oils like flax and fish oil are extremely effective if used consistently.

There is no real reason to avoid any of these substances, save for some allergy.
