its funny how 30 years ago bodybuilders were self motvated and did whatever it takes to get bigger and stonger while trying to keep and mantain their gains. now in 2008 it seems as teenagers as young as 14 and 15 years old are relying on supplements such as testosterone boosters and pre workout energy drinks to keep them engergized. Apparently these kids have not been informed that their test levels are higher then ever and when it really comes down to it, bodybuilding is really defined as how self motivated and determined you are. I at 16 years old relized that the healthier and more i eat (chicken, brown rice, tuna, eggs, steak… etc.) determines my gains.
This is beacuse i have an extremely fast metabolism and need to eat 6 meals a day in order to not loose weight. in my eyes 50 % of bodybuilding is your eating habits. for example how many times a day you eat and exactly what you are eating. Then when i go to the gym i see 14 year olds on alphamale overtraining their biceps meanwhile they ate a snickers and a bag of chips for lunch. the kid came up to me and shows me his new supplemts he ordered online with a huge grin on his face, he shows me his Alpha Male and nitric oxide pills to give him a pre workout pump and he says dylan this shit is gunna get me jacked.
People don’t realize that hard work, and dedication are better than any supplement. Supplements have their place, and obviously are supposed to be used to get the nutrients into your body that you couldn’t get through whole foods, hence the word supplement.
thanks alot for th support and yea thats exactly my point… alot of people especially young teens are starting to rely on these supplements and expect the work to be donw for them.
as of now i am only taking protein shakes but i just ordered creatine and zmas from T-Nation. what supplements do you suggest for gaining some mass considering my bodytype.

I’d say the protein and creatine are just fine for now. I only take a protein shake before and after workouts. Lift hard, and lift heavy, mass will follow.
EDIT, a good multivitamin, and fish oil can be beneficial as well.
The most intelligent post a 16 year old/new member on this site has ever made…or at least recently. Don’t ruin your potentially good reputation by posting a rate my physique and bitching when people tell you to get bigger.
Teenagers go to supplements because they want a quick fix. I’ve spent the last 15 months trying to teach my gf’s little brother (he was 15, now 16) how to train and eat right. I’ve showed him this site, I’ve preached too him, I’ve made great improvements in my physique…he still looks the same and says bro how do you get so “jacked” (remember he’s 125lbs so his perception is that I’m a beast…lol if only he knew…) and bro how do keep benching more? I try to tell him its all about training and eating right but he just doesnt get it.
Keeps telling “dude, James check these arginine pills, check my N.O. explode…I’m getting sick pumps” blah blah blah. Telling me all his new supps are gonna get him “big and ripped”. He’s spent more money on shit supplements (unforunately his parents blow their money for him too…he’s just spoiled…his dad knows it worthless)…than I can even count. I could probably buy a car with all the money he’s pissed away on supps.
Take home point: Train right, eat right, worry about a supplement when your progress stalls. (sans protein powder…this is always a good supp to have)
I also think that the majority of BS supplement ads are targeting teens. I won’t mention a specific company because I know they’ve threatened legal crap against any site or managazine that has anything negative about them on it, but I think we can all see the pattern in any magazine.
I guarentee you Cutler did not win the olympia because of his over the counter supplements, forget what any 5 page ad report says -lol
Feeling that supplements are going to make their body for them also, IMO, leads to them ignoring the hard work of people who are achieving their goals by putting the credit on whatever the other guy is taking. I mean shit, if I was drinking protein shakes I’d just swell up too!

Does Jay Cutler have anything to do with the company you’re talking about?
Oh and too the O.P. since you asked about supplements, learn about eating for gaining mass.
Read “massive eating” all the parts by Dr. John Berardi. Use the search function on this site to locate the articles.
Once you’ve put together a solid diet plan, lay it all out with your daily food intake, what your eating, and all your nutrient ratios…then people can help tweak your diet.
As for supplements, stick to protein powders to makes sure you get in all your protein and creatine just for a little extra edge. That’s all you should be using, couple that with good training and a solid nutrition plan that is geared towards gaining mass and you will put on size, regardless of your body type.
i don’t know, the guy at gnc said cutler takes those exact same thing to get huge, and then he uses his gold card on the first of the month to get so shredded.
For building mass? Makes no difference. Read the article about the product in the store section if you haven’t.
I’ve never taken it but I know people do for their health and to help them sleep. At your age, unless you need it for a specific reason, your money would be better spent on some extra protein or food.
I promise all you need to grow at this point is a good diet, extra protein, and creatine if you want to use it.
I absolutely can not stress to you enough how much better gains you’ll make if you consciously make up a good eating plan and stick to it 90% of time.
If your avatar is you, then you are very lean and don’t need to worry about getting fat. Eat mostly clean foods but go ahead and eat the things you like too. Just make sure your getting in enough protein and total calories. I promise you reading “massive eating” or other informational articles about eating to build size and implementing the strategies in there will make your gains better.
Type out what you have eaten the last 2 days and what your normal weekly weightlifting routine is. People will help you, you have a good attitude. Stay humble and realize there is alot of good info on this site if you are willing to listen to advice and look.
i just started my new diet last week and have been sticking to it well. its just difficult because i have to do my own food shopping because i live with my grandparents and they eat raisan bran and soup. so its hard for me to go to school, go to work, go to the gym and on top of that keep a strict diet. but i really do appreciate any advice you can give me and thanks alot for everyones help.
my workout routine is
mon - chest
tues - back
wed - off
thurs - shoulders/traps
fri - legs/ bis - tris
sat/sun - off
normally i wake up at about 6:45
7:00 either oatmeal or eggs and a shake.
11:30 chicken cutlets and pasta
2:30 whatever the special at the deli is for 4.95… usually consist of chicken or pasta.
from 3 - 6 im at work so i can’t eat.
6:00 protein shake
6:30 gym time woo
8:00 50g of sugar (orange juice) and a shake with dinner.
dinner usually chicken/brown rice, tuna, steak and potatos or if grandma feels like cookin spaghetti and meatballs.
do my homework … go to sleep and do it all again tomorow
not too bad but the next couple days try to count up your calories…use something like fitday.com or another website to get a ballpark for thinks you cant count (like your lunch)
You probably arent getting in as many calories as you should be since your eating pretty clean foods.
It’s not just bodybuilding. Teens seem to act that way about everything these days.
Be thankful you’re too smart to fall into that trap.
ZMA is a good supp for almost everyone. Especially males since we never get enough zinc or magnesium in our diets. The ratio of mineral in ZMA products has also been proven to raise testosterone levels (esp. in us older dudes) but that may be due to the more restful sleep it provides.
Since you’re so lean I would recommend more healthy, Omega-3 fats in your diet. Fish oil, olive oil, nuts, avocado, etc.
tomorow i will write down everything i eat and use that website to figure it out and i will let you know. but if im not consuming enough calories can i just drink weight gainer shakes?

I think the problem is that most people, kids especially, don’t understand what it takes to gain muscle. I’m 16 as well. When I started out, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. It wasn’t until I started reading this site that I made gains.
When I go to the weight room at my high school, I just can’t help but laugh at these kids who drink Mountain Dew in between sets of bitchy, not-even-half squats.

Yes if you are having trouble getting in the calories the super-shakes are a good idea, especially for like at work when you can’t eat, you can slam one real fast. Don’t buy weight gainer shakes tho, they are mostly crap loaded with sugar and some shitty protein.
Try making shakes that are either protein and carbs or protein and fat.
Examples of each
Protein+fat shake
Protein powder,
olive oil
milk
peanut butter
All mixed up together, play around with how much of each based on how many calories you need to get in with that shake (this is why you need to rea the articles and figure out how many calories you need each day)
A protein+carb shake would be something like
Protein powder
milk or juice
oats
cottage cheese
fruit
from your comment it seems you don’t know a ton about nutrition. I reccomend going to the beginner forum and reading the stickies about nutrition and training.
I’ve helped you so far, but people are gonna tell you to start reading and learning for yourself. No one is gonna just lay it all of for you, read some articles…I’ve already told you which ones, and people will give you advice.
Most of my friends think taking stuff like N.O. Xplode will get them hyooge but, these are usually the same guys who go out drinking all the time and don’t train legs.
