How Do I Shut People Up?

I began lifting about 4 months ago, since day one people told me that deadlifting is bad for me, but all its done is get me a hell of a lot stronger.

Just the other day i was deadlifting and the owner of the gym said that he was proud that i was doing that much weight but i needed to stop cause i was going to hurt myself. I ignored his comment and went as heavy and hard as i could that day.

In the course of a few months i have heard several little comments but ignored them. But this fucking got to me. My favorite fucking thing to do in the gym is dead lift and he is sitting there saying i should not do it.FUCK THAT!!!

And its not like he was critiquing my form( which if you ask me is not bad because i practiced and read and read and then got people to tell me what i was doing wrong before i started going heavy).

Anyways this is coming from a guy that is squatting 225 with a belt and barely going parallel. I never brag but i do more weight than that after deadlifting.

I have only ran into 3 people in that gym that say deadlifting is good for you and about 20 somethin hate it. Or give me a stupid ass glare when i am busting my ass off during the lift.

Actually i get a lot of glares on my exercises( farmer walks, ass to grass squatts, front squats, rack pulls, etc.)

Anyways i just want a way of shutting them up. I thought about lifting as much weight as i could and throwing it on top of them next time they speak but i dont have another gym to go to if i do that.

Any suggestions on how to shut them up?

just ignore it and tell yourself you know a secret that they never will. eventually you will get to a point of size and strength that no one will say anything. till then, lift hard.

Those sort of comments tend to stop when you start becoming one of the bigger guys in your gym.

Yeah, get your standard DL up over 500#… that ought to do it!

These people, unfortunately including the gym ‘manager’, obviously don’t have a CLUE what they’re talking about.

Does the gym have a soda machine out by the squat rack too?

Stick to your goals, and anyone who doesn’t support 'em can pack sand. If they’re not interested in giving you some USEFUL info, tell 'em to hit the road. Tell the people in the corner critiquing you, all while doing endless forearm curls and comparing wanker sizes, to get a fucking life.

is this gym a 24hr or Bally Total Fitness? Or a REAL gym?

thruth

Get an Ipod, zune or MP3 of some sort, blast the music really loud and when someone is tapping you trying to get your attention just start screaming the lyrics to some crazy deathmetal.

Guess what man? It wont ever stop, so just get used to it. The alt. is to either 1) go to a powerlifting/strongman/oly gym or 2) get a home gym.

Stop slamming the weights down, screaming, and looking around wildly to see if any of the pathetic mortals are staring at you.

That ought to shut them up real good!

Get an MP3 player and listen to it the while at the gym. If people are talking just point at your earphones to signal you can’t hear them. Then keep deadlifting. Besides, who gives a shit what most people in the gym say. They’re mostly small and make no progress, why would you listen to them?

Finding a better gym would do the trick, at my gym there are powerlifters who after deadlifting loudly drop the chalk-covered bar with 500lbs down after every set and no one bats an eyelash.

My life would be so much different (in a bad way) now if I had signed up for a membership and personal training at the closer commercial gym down the road.

Dont tell anyone your goals otherwise most people will just shit on your parade. No point in having people’s bad vibes mess with your progress, just stay grinding and keep at it. And if anyone gives you lip, punch em in the mutherf–king mouth!

At my gym people think it’s cool.
I’m one of the rare few that does ATG squats and such and people think it’s awesome. I’ve been given alot of praise for it.
It’s also the most commercial gym in my city.
There are like 15 of them.

Just be smooth about it i think its cool when someone does a big lift. I usually watch em and crack a joke when their done like ‘now comes the hard part’ when they have to rerack 10 45 plates while gasping for breath.

It can scare the cardio bunnies though clanking around all that weight specially if u scream and grunt. So dont yell out and make a spectacle if theres lots of em there. The gym manager just wants to maintain the faggy atmosphere for the stairmasters etc they pay the dues haha.

Well, if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em.

What could be better than alternating tricep kick-backs and Swiss ball crunches with the rest of the lemmings at your gym?

Seriously, learn to stop caring about what other people think; it will come handy throughout the later years of your life.

Concentrate on your program less than focusing on people looking at you. Problem goes away.

You look young, maybe he thinks you’re really injuring yourself doing those deadlifts. I have no idea of your form, but since you said that you read a lot on this site, just reassure him that you’ll be fine. Don’t get mad at him, what for?

Deads are my favorite lift too, can’t get enough of 'em. Fuck everyone else in the gym, let them stay weak.

I’m completely in the zone while training: Pantera/Down turned all the way up, scowl on my face, body language like I’m about to snap and go postal, etc. Everyone is virtually invisible.

It scares the shit out of the wannabes and women, NOBODY says a damn thing, EVER. Occasionally someone will muster up the courage to ask for a spot, but that’s about it.

Keep it up man, just ignore those bastards.

keep doing what you’re doing. there are a lot of people who are “older” in my community and whenever I do 20 rep squats/leg press widowmakers i turn red and breathe hard and they always say that Im over exerting myself or straining myself. For me the point of lifting is to strain myself in a positive manner (lifts are hard, but safe and beneficial)

Stares, glares, …it really doesnt matter. keep lifting and doing your deadlifts.

Stick a sock in their mouths.

Seriously though, just try to ignore it. There’s no need to worry about what people that don’t get it think about what you are doing.
