At my local university gym there is no area to deadlift, as they are not allowed. They “aren’t safe” or some bullshit. So I do them in my friend’s garage, but it is much more of a hassle as far as my workout schedule is concerned.
Does anybody else have to put up with this shit at their gyms?
any squat cages? i think that in that situation deading in the cage is acceptable. If they say “no dead lifting” then give it a different name and tell them your doctor told you to do them. same goes for chalk, best answer is always, “what chalk?”
Is there no floor space? Cuz that’s all you need to deadlift.
And I like the “not safe” comment. There is nothing safe about weight lifting if you don’t know what you are doing. I could hurt myself doing ANY exercise. Don’t listen to people when they say crap like that. Deadlifts are a staple exercise in many programs. They just don’t know any better.

Call them rack pulls. Make sure you actually use the pins as to avoid suspicion.

I’ve seen this before, but not in university gyms. Some of the “wussier” chain gyms, like Bally’s, have a no deadlifting policy at many locations, ostensibly for two reasons. One is liability. And the other is that the noise from dropping of the bar disturbs the delicate ears of the stewardesses who are there for the aerobics and elliptical machines. Really.
I’ve also known some of these wuss gyms to top out at 50-LB dumbbells. Again, liability is the stated reason.
At the University of Arizona (when I was there a hundred or so years ago) they had two gyms: one at the “Student Fitness Center” where there were limits; and a real man’s weight room in the basement of Bear Down gym, where you could power lift. I think the weight room in Bear Down Gym is gone, but the Student Center is more permissive of what exercises they’ll allow these days.

I actually train at the UA rec center while I’m visiting the u.s. deads are definitely allowed.
As for the OP, you should really try to change your gym since the one you are at seems to blow pretty hard

HAHA, I would like to see the looks on their faces after this one.
My university gym we can deadlift but we can’t do Olympic lifts.
When I hang clean, I just pay attention for floor attendants. Also, when they come over and say no Olympic lifting I say…“name the 3 Olympic lifts”. Usually they can’t…also…just reply “Why are you not allowing me to get stronger in the gym”.
Also, the signs so no “Olympic lifts” I say…“this isn’t an Olympic lift…its a variation”.
Yes, I have actually responded in these ways and the trainer’s often piss off. If all else fails say “sure” and wait till they walk away again. Fuck them, their small and weak…at least at FSU.
All the gyms I’ve gone to haven’t had a problem with deads or oly lifts. 2 of the gyms outright encourage them (my high school and college gyms- both run by strong individuals who probably read T-Nation).
Thats what I love about my gym. Heavy squats, Deadlifts and Benches are nothing but ENCOURAGED. Also being a member of a gym run by an Ex professional bodybuilder has it’s own rewards, eg - Program design and nutrition.
People and gyms not encouraging basic movements like Deadlifts should piss off and relocate on the moon.
I go to Anytime Fitness, a “fitness” chain and even they allow deadlifting. Hell, the trainer even knows every day that I deadlift and says “excellent”. Find a new gym that allows them.
