Has anyone had an inguinal hernia repair? How long was the rehab? How soon after surgery did you start training? When did you carry on with heavy training? Thanks.
I have had 2 Hernia repairs and found it relatively easy to get back to training both times. The amount of rehab etc will I think depend on the amount of time out you have/will have had away from the gym. For me I really didn’t feel like I needed much as I was training up until a couple of days before surgery then it looked something like this (the most recent was approx. 10 years ago so don’t remember precisely). Week 1 didn’t do much just day to day stuff like getting up making food etc. Week 2 went out for a few walks and did some light cycling. Week 3 started going to the gym but only used machines so I didn’t have to worry to much about stabilization and stuck with light weights. Week 4 still on machines but slightly heavier weights added in some swimming. Week 5 onwards started adding in some free-weights again using only light weights - then just built on it from there. If nothing hurts then go a bit heavier next time, I was back to normal soon after. I know this is completely unscientific and far to simple for a lot people these days but I feel like we overcomplicate things to much sometimes. The body provides great feedback and if it hurts or feels uncomfortable then you should probably stop doing it.
