Fixing Weak Elbows

Hi all,

First time posting here in awhile although I’ve been a frequent reader these past few months.

I hurt my elbow a few years ago playing soccer, and since then the elbow has been pretty weak when it comes to military presses, to the point where my spotting partner has told me it feels like my arm is going to snap off. I am having a hard time making gains in my presses because of this issue, and am wondering if anyone can recommend some strengthening tips to help with the situation? Just to provide an example, I can bench press 275lbs but have trouble hoisting up 60lb dumbbells for shoulder presses so you can see that I need help! Thanks!

How on earth do you hurt your elbow playing soccer? How does your partner know what your arm feels like? Did you ever get it looked at so you can clarify what you did to it? Is it tendinitis, sprain, strain, tear etc… Gotta give us something to work with other than it hurts.

I assume you have never played/watched soccer?

  1. He may be a goalkeeper, so has to dive for the ball - impact from ground.
  2. Challenge on ground and fell on it
  3. Challenge in air and fell on it

Are you rowing as much as you are pressing? A lot of shoulder problems are caused by too much pressing and to little rowing, but the same goes for the elbow!

Instability of the elbow by a disbalance in pressing and pulling? You’ll have to explain that one…

Orthopedic literature states that most of the time the cause of instability of the elbow is a traumatic event. The MCL and LCL provide 50% of the joint stability.

Hey thanks for the replies.

I hurt my elbow playing soccer as I was a defender and slipped on a wet field and the player behind me ran into me and hit my elbow with his knee. I couldn’t bend my arm after that so went to the hospital where the doctor in charge forced my elbow to bend, making a big popping noise which I suspect is the reason my elbow is weak now.

My training partner assists me with my lifts by putting his hands under my elbows incase it does pop like I fear it will, and so my shoulder doesnt rip off.
