Don't Take The Flying Sofa

My membership expires today, I have a month by month gym pass.

I’ve been writing down everything I do as far as training, and have realize something about my regime.

There is not enough running. I realize, to be a physical person, it is a lifestyle, and alot of people think the lifestyle is just driving your ass to the gym and training.

My gym is 3 miles away from my home, so I’ve been driving there, as if it FAR or something.

I don’t sit on my ass and watch tv, I try to be as active as possible.

I realized, a car is just a flying sofa. The fact that we base our movement on an automobile which is both clumsy and expensive to maintain is sad.

Taking a car everywhere and not being able or comfortable to run your ass places is like, learning to type but never learning how to write script. Actually its more absurd than even that.

It’s an ass backwards concept.

Anyways, my new thing is, I’m not going to renew my membership until I can and will run to my gym every day to train.

Then I’m going to move on to running to school and to work.

When I honestly think about it, lifting weights is the easy part, compared to running. I thought I was hard cuz I was getting a bigger bench, but lifting weights is no where near as difficult mentally as running a long distance. If I can run to my gym, when I get there and keep up the intensity on my work outs. I will have met my goal and stepped to a new level of training.

Anyone else done this?

Interesting thinking, but i think many people on this board dislike running because it’s cardio and you will have to increase your calorie intake in order to gain muscles.

How about biking? Nice little warmup, should only take about 10-15 minutes, won’t be as catabolic as running.

Double that. I had lost 50 pounds my senior year after football to get to 162…I held that weight, about 162-170 for 2 years, all the while running about 15-20 miles a week. No matter how hard I tried it was a bitch progressing in the gym, in fact I don’t think I did. Biking would be good, and take the feeling of being a “lazy ass car driver” out of it.

Squat days are going to be a bitch.

Why not push your car to the gym? You could probably cancel your membership.

Did you actually think about this before you posted it? Your plan is fine for people who live in cities and have access to everything within walking distance. For the majority of people in North America, walking/running everywhere is not feasible. Does it make sense for me to get up 2 hours earlier each day to walk to the train that takes me to work or get in my car and drive 20 minutes? It’s kind of a no-brainer.

If you want to sacrifice your weight training by not going all-out in the gym because you have to run home afterward, knock yourself out. I think most people on here can separate their cardio from their weight training and be just fine.

This isn’t even about mental toughness.

I live in a suburban environment. I wasn’t saying people who don’t run or do this are pussies or something.

I was saying, not driving, and using your body more often is a good idea.

And ya, I think cycling, is a better idea.

Maybe cycle one day, run the next.

Also, I don’t think running for the majority of people is unfeasible, I just think they are uncomfortable with it.

There is a big difference.

When you live in the suburban environment you get accustomed to driving even if you don’t really need to.

Obviously it depends on what your goals are. If you wanna be able to run 3 miles, train, and then run back, good for you. I think that is too much. I could see working out 3 days a week and running 2 or 3 others, but not everyday. Like someone said squat days are going to be a bitch.

What about running on your hands? Think about how ripped your shoulders would get.

Day 1 - Bike
Day 2 - Run
Day 3 - Run on hands
Day 4 - Scoot on your ass like a dog
Day 5 - Do the worm
Day 6 - Off
Day 5 - Off

I’m assuming you’re gonna go 5 days on, 2 days off. Let me know if you’ve got a different split in mind.

I would flip-flop day 4 and day 5. You’re going to need a few days off after scooting on your ass like a dog, particularly if it’s roadwork.

LMAO!

I saw this movie Conan The Barbarian, and in it, Arnold just pushes some pole around for 6 years and gets huge.

If Arnold can do it, why not me?

As far as walking on the hands, why not? I don’t know about the worm tho.

There is another problem with running everywhere - you WILL smell and you will get swamp ass and crotch rot - unless you’re going to shower 3-4 times a day and carry multiple changes of clothes. Get used to people staying away from you.

I’m not trying to discourage you from improving your fitness through running. I just think that your plan of abandoning the automobile and running everywhere is quixotic.

You’re screwing around, right? You do realize Conan The Barbarian wasn’t a documentary? Arnold did some other work to supplement that pole pushing. And it was more like 10 years anyway that he pushed the pole.

Walking like a crab is a great whole body movement and should never be left out of any program.

as someone on “the other side of the grass” so to speak, its a lot better taking a car. i dont have that option. the gym i go to is a mile or two from my house so i walk to the train station for about 15-20 mins then take a bus. then i usually walk home which takes me a half hour. its also cold as fuck here. you dont need to be doing some sort of activity every second of the day, its not that serious. take a car and be thankful you have it.

I just loooove to walk to my gym, especially at this time of the year when it is impossible to even bike what with all the snow and sludge around.

Right now it’s cold, wet, dark and I am depressed… dont even know why I train since it doesnt seem to improve my life that much anyway.

edit: wasnt suppose to post that whine… fuck why is there a reset button that instead of removing your post, sends it? Oh and I’d probably be dead without the ability to exercise… could do without the guilt though when I miss a workout, got plenty of that going around as it is.
