Do I Need a Spotter for Front Squats?

Hi, do I need a spotter for front squats? I will be doing sets of 8-10 reps and using squat stands - i.e. no powercage or bars or safety mechanisms to lower the bar onto, I shouldn’t fail with those reps but in the unlikely outcome I should fail on a rep, do I need a spotter or can I just push it forward to the ground. The ground is padded so it won’t damage the flooring. Just wondering if I need a spotter or not, obviously a spotter for back squat is essential but im not sure with a front so has anyone got experiences of this? thanks =)

Surely only you know the answer to this, if you are working with a weight that you feel requires a spotter get one.

If you are not sure get one anyway, just make sure its someone that will push you and they and understand your goals.

front squats are pretty easy to ditch forward most of the time if you need to. Try it out and if you feel uncomfortable then get a spotter but I think you’ll be alright.

Skip to 1:26, just dump the bar in front of you.

Nope

I don’t use a spotter for front squats. I’ve had to dump the weight a few times, its never been a problem.

Just squat in a power rack with the safety pins set to a level that will save you if you fail.

That’s not the spotter’s job, that’s yours… His job is to make sure you don’t die if you don’t do your job.

I agree

OP, its not fun having to ditch a weight forward on a front squat but you can do it. Spotter is not a nececity

What is the spotter, you say?

Most the time when someone fails a front squat, the weight starts to fall forward. A spotter won’t be able to help in this situation and you may end up injuring yourself or the spotter. Like others have said dump it forward.
