Hey guys, I need some verification about spotting back squats.
I recently had a little discussion with a friend about the correct way to spot. I was underneath the impression that your spooter should stand behind you and squat with you on the way up.
He dismissed that idea, saying that it is better to have said spotter push your chest and lower back in opposite directions to “retain form”.
squat with them, really just learn to throw the weight if your on platforms. Or if your in a rack just let the weight drop behind you.
The way I spot to help them finish a heavy set I kind of squat with them hug them sort of-hand s crossed around them under shoulders- from behind and help bring them up
If you squat with them and “hug them” or “push” on anything you are going to throw them off balance. If any appreciable weight is involved this is extremely dangerous for both parties.
If there is any “safe” way to spot with only one spotter, it is to only lift straight up on the bar as needed. If this seems ridiculous to you, then there needs to be more than one spotter or use the rack.

Couldn’t agree more. This is how the football coach taught us (Nebraska lineman). Stand behind, arms beneath shoulders, hug and pull up. Of course this would be for a back squat. Front squat just let it fall forward.

thanks for clarification guys. I thought it was screwy after he described it, just making sure that this wasn’t becoming a norm in gyms across the world
