I’ve been struggling with overhead shoulder ROM/thoracic mobility for awhile now. I’ve been doing foam roller stuff, PVC shoulder dislocations, and some chest/lat stretches.
These provide temporary relief, but I’m wondering if I’m missing the big picture: breathing correctly.
From Wikipedia: “The diaphragm functions in breathing. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts, thus enlarging the thoracic cavity (the external intercostal muscles also participate in this enlargement). This reduces intra-thoracic pressure: In other words, enlarging the cavity creates suction that draws air into the lungs.”
Also reading, Dave Draper’s site, he recommends a breathing exercise.
I’ve tried the exercise, and I feel an incredible tightness in my thoracic spine. From the article, I take that it is supposed to feel good, but I get a tight feeling.
I’m curious, have any others here tried this exercise. Had any great success with it?
