DB Rows - What Do You Use?

I’ll join in.

The “normal” dumbells at my gym go to 140. They used to go to 150 until someone broke them. The best I did with the 150 was a set of 45. The two vids above are a 211.2LB DB for 24 with my right and 23 with my left.

where did you get the db handles from.

Damn Bruno. What sucks about doing that high of reps is that when you’re done…you need to do it with the other side lol.

Kroc didn’t at the Arnold demonstration, so I won’t either. :stuck_out_tongue:

Do you know of any place that sells DB handles like that, but maybe a bit longer for more weight plates?

Man that is a huge dumbell. What do you use for collars? They look a little different in the video.

LOL. My left arm is actually my stronger arm so I do it last, but still, I take about 4-5 mintues between arms to catch my breathe. If I rush it, I can’t even close to matching the reps with my other arm, even though it’s stronger.

These will hold 300 pounds, but they are expensive as hell. I would love a pair of these.

Looks like some of these type to me.

Yeah Therizza, its those. The spring collars have a bad habbit of stabbing you in the chest when you use them.

I realize they can hold a lot, but how many 10s can fit on each side? I’d rather use 10s for most lifts instead of slapping the bigger 25s.

I have never tried to fit 10s on them, so don’t know. I will see how many will fit the next time I am in the gym and post a pic for you though.

Thanks bud! Some guy from http://www.fatbastardbarbellco.com/ just told me that he might be able to custom-make me one of the longer DB handles in about a month. That would be pretty sweet.

My gym only goes up to 40kg - 88lbs. =[

But I can only do them for 10 in each hand at the moment, so I haven’t totally outgrown it yet.

Ok, so attached is the pic. A few things:

You can only fit 5 10s per side+ a collar. This makes the DB a whopping 111.2LBs. So, this would only be useful if you trained in an utterly shit gym that had DBs no larger than 100s. Honestly, using 25s does not decrease the range of motion that much, if at all really. The only discernable change that I have found from using the olympic handles with 25s is that you can’t really row with an overhanded grip like you can with a conventional DB. A neutral grip works perfectly fine though, unless you have some specific wrist/elbow/shoulder issues that prevent it. If you wanted to load up a DB handle with 10s and get a respectable poundage on it, the handle would have to be one long SOB. Anyway, hope this was helpfull.

It sure was, it convinced me not to buy one… unless… how many 25s fit on there? I’m assuming 3 each side, which would be a total of ~161lbs, which honestly is heavy enough for me for 6 months or so.

I’ve never really felt the need to go over a pair of 125’s, I do mine bent over with both arms at once (much better contraction than with a barbell). (“if you can’t hold it there, then you didn’t lift it with your muscles, you threw it there” - Yates)

Interesting quote, never heard it before but it makes perfect sense.

I only recently added 1 arm DB rows into my routine again, but my gyms DBs only go up to 42kg, so Ive been forced to do strict reps and hold the contraction just so I can use a lighter DB with max effect.

The video I posted has 4 per side for a total weight of 211.2LBs. The best I have done with those is 24. Once I get to 30, I will probably try using 35s and see what that is like.

EDIT: I think SteelyD has posted a way to add more weight to DB rows somewhere also. Involves some straps and an interesting use of collars I believe.

DoveofWar- Thanks for taking the picture. I was really hoping to find one that would hold enough 10’s to make it usable, but it’s good to know that it works for you. I notice that you do your rows standing, and I like to do them in the videos on the first page, with my knee on a bench and more bent over, so I’m not sure how the range of motion would work doing it that way with 25’s. Do you have a link for those collars? That handle looks pretty reasonably priced so I may try it out and see. Thanks!

I work ut in a gym that only goes up to 85lb DB. Its “sister” gym down the block only goes up to 75lb and the only bars it has are EZ Curls to 110lb and TWO Smith Machines! We have bars and plates here because they were here 25 years ago.

Welcome to the world of corporate fitness!

When I got to the point where I need to bench or pull heavier DBs I ghetto-rigged a couple small plates to the DBs. We also have a small tricep bar which works ok for a somewhat longish dumbbell…IMPROVISE!

I’ve also turned our shoulder press rack into a squat rack. Keeps your form TIGHT!
