Crossfit vs Powerlifting

Im not too hard on crossfit, but it is just not for me (unless I one day become single again, then maybe). If I were to start a gym, it would probably look a lot like some of the better crossfit gyms Ive seen.

What bothers me most is when the crossfitters tell me that it makes them “ready for anything” like they are going to survive the zombie apocalypse with kipping pull ups and a 185 lb deadlift.

This invariably precedes the more evangelical telling me that its perfect for me, because I train for strength, and crossfit trains strength!

That said, Ive been about 4-5 times, and never finished the workout there. However, I could always squat my instructor and his max squat when I have gone, so maybe Ive still got a shot in the end times.

I own a CrossFit affiliate. And I am a non competitive powerlifter, weightlifter, CrossFitter. I say I am non competitive, because I do it for myself. As alot of other people do too. I am a former competitive powerlifter and have abandoned the sport because of all of the shit that is and will always be argued about on here. Now I squat for me and me only. I snatch and clean and do stupid kipping pullups and all of the other gay shit us CrossFitters do. But I no longer do concentration curls, or tricep kick backs, or leg extensions. I think that is a good thing.

My gym has zero treadmills, zero mirrors, and zero Zumba classes, 11 squat racks, thousands of pounds of iron and bumper plates, 4 GHD’s, 1 reverse hyper, texas power bars, platforms, bands, chains, prowler etc. Lot’s of other CrossFit gyms do too.

I have said this before and will say it again. CrossFit is a sport. There are lots of differnt levels of abilities in sports fellas. I fucking suck at basketball, I make it look like an absolute joke. What does that say about basketball? Nothing. Watch the best of the best CrossFitters and you will see why it deserves respect, just like the best of the best in any sport.

I have a 110 kilo snatch, 142 kilo clean, 470 lb back squat, 525 lb deadlift, 220 lb strict press, 25 strict pullups and am pretty darn good at alot of shit I never would have thought I would be good at since starting CrossFit. I know how my numbers stack against other 190 lb raw lifters. I am not going to set any records, but I like still being relatively strong and being athletic enough to do handstand pushups, muscle ups and other “Gay shit.”

I am not trying to win anyone over here, but the absolute ingnorance and arrogance of some of you guys is exactly what you say you hate about CrossFit. Most of you have no idea what you are talking about. I guess most of you don’t want to know and that is okay. I don’t want to know the in’s and out’s of water polo but I respect the hell out of people who play it. Mostly because I try not to be an egotistical prick.
You mad bro?

CrossFit programming is retarded btw, there is no way anybody is going to try and explain the programming of the WOD. 3 on 1 off complete as man spinal spasms in 2 minutes followed by 100 max effort deadlifts for 2 minutes…fucking brilliant.
Funny, I have been doing CrossFit for 5 years and have never done that workout. Did you make it up? I think I’ll try it.
Whatever, that programming is whack and everybody knows it. You don’t have to be a coach to see that.

I don’t understand how crossfit is a sport , unless you consider working out a sport

One funny thought that just ocurred to me is how much

“Crossfit sucks/is X!”
“Thats not really crossfit youre criticising”

sounds like a Westside argument.

Been reading STB’s blog there, eh Dirk-y :)?

I liked it better when it was just called training.

YES i do read STB’s blog as well as Jamie Lewis’ C+P blog as well.

Jamie just has the most in your face style that I do appreciate.

Before we called it “training” I believe as KIDS we called it “PLAYING”

and our mothers would have to call us in way past sunset to get us to eat

wash up then go to sleep, only to do it all over again the next day : )

It’s ironic that you mention zombies and then C&P without having seen this (linked on Jamie Lewis’ site)

What I like about CrossFit is that I can do all the stufff I am interested in in the gym and call it something. I like when strength athletes are diverse. Probably why I like Koklaev more than any other athlete. He may noy be the best powerlifter or weightlifter or strongman or highland games athlete, but he is the BEST powerlifter/weightlifter/strongman/highland games athlete.
First: i am a fan of Koklaev myself, he’s a beast. Secondly: i don’t really care about CF as long as they don’t try to argue they’re the ultimate alpha race.

But if it’s all about “multiclassing” i have a good shot at being the best Sax player/Software Engineer/Photographer/MountainBiker/Powerlifter in the world and i’m nothing but mediocre at most of those at best. That isn’t a valid argument.
Misha has enough level to compete at the highest level in those disciplines while crossfitters, well… don’t.

Maybe this is why Louie is the face of Crossfit Powerlifting.

So true. We used to call it being active. Wrestlers , humm. Decathletes. Even triathletes if you’re sticking to distance events. This stuff has been around for years. But it was never stupid until now.

As for being prepared for anything , is crossfit now teaching marksmanship , self defense , shelter building, vehicle repair etc, etc.
In apocalypse time how well I can shoot my M1 A is more important than a kipping pullup or ten over unders.

and when armageddon comes, who is going to manufacture your M1 A rounds for you? that’s right, a crossfitter

Fuck. I feel like the more I post on here the worse my argument becomes. I don’t give a shit if you guys like CrossFit. I do. I love all this shit, but apparently I am the only one. I don’t care about the “zombie apocolypse” I don’t care about being ready for anything. I do not do CrossFit because I think it is superior to anything, I just like it.

This is a powerlifting forum , what do you expect?

Love those guys, I’d never be caught dead doing it but who can piss on them when most people are too obese to tie their shoes. Any gymmish fad is a good fad these days, save maybe for HIT but that’s never coming back so all is good in the world

Never say never. Stuff always comes back because someone can make money and people have short memories.
I just do not see the need for organized fitness randomness. Run hills, ride a bike, do pullups , lift
.
And while the champ of crossfit winds 250 k, MLB players make that in one pitching start, or for half a football game , or one golf tournament , or a NASCAR race. Right now crossfit is the king of sports that no one cares about in the general public. And it’s because all of our sports that look like training are boring.
