BB Row Form

I’m not too happy that I happened across this thread. I perform my BB rows pretty much the same as Bug and the OP and guess what they work well, I can’t believe these tiny kids are whining.

I also noticed the people who posted vids of their “correct” BB rows were small as shit.

also, who the fuck looks at the ground with a “flat back” doing rows. that’s fine for 135lbs, but if you’re looking to row some weight that will actually make your back big and strong, you need to protect the lower back by arching and contracting the lower back. to do so you need to push the chest out and keep the head up to keep from rounding.

again… how do take anything a person says seriously when they are dressed like that??

I’ve been lurking this thread since it was started and after seeing this video, I decided to try my rows more like this. ( I had been doing them similar to the OP and bugeishaAD ) I was also feeling like I was jerking the weight a bit and liked the fluidity of the movement in this vid.

Two things I took away from this vid and have tried to emulate:

He seems to stick his chest out during the concentric which seems to help with bringing the scapula together. Also, and it seems to be in conjunction with the the former, is that his shoulders don’t stay “locked” into place while the elbows initiate the movement. His shoulders are pulling back during the concentric, and drop down during the eccentric as if the movement is actually initiated with the shoulders.

Anyway, this vid has definitely improved the effectiveness of my BB row. Poundages have dropped a bit but I’m “feeling” it much more.

For simplicity’s sake, why not differentiate between a row and a scapular retraction or “horizontal shrug”? I certainly see the value in the latter (I like to superset them with full ROM rows on the T-Bar). But if the focus is on retracting the shoulder blades with a heavy weight and not so much shoulder extension, why call it the same thing? You’re not going to do a power shrug and call it a high pull. Why is this any different?

I’m not sure if I’m following you 100%. Are you saying that if you intentionally retract your scapula during a BB row, it should be considered a horizontal shrug? Do you consider, then, BB Rows to be a movement in which scapular retraction isn’t necessary? Again, just trying to clarify what you mean.

I would consider a horizontal shrug to be executed by ONLY pulling the shoulders back with your arms hanging.
With a row, scapula are retracted as well as the upper arm/elbow moving posteriorly (sp?).

“Horizontal shrug” wtf? By definition, that would be a BB row essentially, which is probably why we’re not bothering to give a damn about the specific terminology.

The point is, clearly doing HEAVY rows with some body english works for building a bigger back, and the bigger people are sick of the smaller ones telling them otherwise. Tell Ronnie he’d be better off using less weight and focusing on form. After all, he knows nothing about building a big strong as fuck back.

Also Barbell rows in my gym are pretty controvercial. Everyone thinks they are an expert but I just keep hearing different guys saying shit like “Your not bent over enough so your not working anything” or “your bent over too far and you;ll hurt your back”

been ignoring it but this thread seems like a help.
