Rows, either pendlay style, bent style, whatever, should never be done with momentum. You are not trying to train your lower back dynamically. This movement should be done super strict, cause after all, you’re trying to add mass on your upper back. Let us think of it this way, many people consider barbell curls to be one of the best exercises to build your biceps, and yet, none of these people recommend any “body english”. Same thing with rows. They should be done strict, and the only type of action that your posterior chain should be involved with is isometric, NOT DYNAMIC!

Anyway, as far as maraudermeat’s epic post about me, your form still sucks. What exactly is your purpose for doing deadlift + row combo? If you’re trying to build your UPPER BACK then it is not ideal to do it.
But as I said, my opinions doesn’t matter cause you’re very strong… It just so happens that your form blows.

As long as his low-back doesn’t round, it doesn’t matter at all whether he’s using it to lift some more weight or not… The part of rowing technique which determines whether you use your backthickness musculature (which would be the main reason to do that kind of row) primarily/train it well does not have anything to do with the low-back.
You are totally focusing on the wrong thing…

i guess i gotta get back to doing bent over rows again. 5x5 with that sort of weight is brutal. great job!! get a vid of it if you can so i’m not the only one being bashed for poor form:)
Ok, I’m sick of this “bad form” shit and what people are and are not training.
Let’s break it down.
When MM is in the starting position for the row (essentially a low deadlift position) his hamstring muscles will be working eccentrically to maintain his posterior pelvic tilt. His gluteals are maintaining pelvic and sacroiliac stability (as are the deep abdominals). The erector spinae and rectus abdominis will be co-contracting to buttress the spinal column, along with the latissimus which is also working to stablize the shoulder as well as the spinal column through its various fascial attachments into the spine. With specific interest on the erector spinae, these will be working significantly the length of the spinal column.
ALL OF THIS MUSCULATURE IS EFFECTIVELY BEING LOADED WITH A STRENGTH TRAINING STIMULUS THE WHOLE TIME DURING THE REPETITIONS.
There is no hinging about any spinal segment, hence no significant injury risk. Any pivoting during movement can be observed through the axis of his hip joint. These being the muscles with the largest anatomical cross sectional area in the body, it’s a safe movement.
During the dynamic movement, MM is essentially doing two movements. Horizontal shoulder extension and scapular retraction. This will recruit, in no particular order, the posterior deltoid, trapezius (all fibers), rhomboids, rotator cuff, and latissimus.
This is not including the fact that he still has to maintain his flexed trunk posture with a load below him, which means that the entire posterior kinetic chain is contracting to maintain stability, as well everything else mentioned above.
Haven’t even talked about what’s happening around the shoulder/elbow/wrist during the movement or in maintaining stability.
So, to summarize, this is an incredible fucking exercise that everyone should do in some capacity.
If you’re not hinging substantially around a spinal segment, you ain’t going to fuck it up and are going to get some massive benefits for a just a few muscle groups!!

As I said, a different aspect of rowing technique is responsible for just how much your upper/midback is getting out of rows. If he gets that part right (and I daresay he probably does… Because… You know… He has a rather big back?), then getting some extra weight up/more reps with the help of his low back can actually be beneficial to upper back strength/development.
It’s the same as with, say, curls. (sorry to bring that exercise up here lol)
A beginner cheats and gets nothing out of them. A vet cheats and it helps get his bis bigger than ever, even feels a lot more natural than the idiotic textbook form suggested by 150 lb writers all over the planet.
The point here is that the beginner only sees the cheating part and pretty much only does the cheating part.
The vet knows that that’s not the main aspect of curl/row/whatever technique. As long as you get the core part right, you can cheat if you’re comfortable with that and get more out of the exercise that way.
If you don’t have a clue what the core-part is(or at least do it right instinctively), then you’re pretty much doomed to a life of making “his form is terrible, OMGZORZ!”-comments in the youtube comments section and you’ll probably never achieve impressive levels of strength/size… Or at least not without a ton of unnecessary injuries on the way and a lot of chemical warfare going on.

You know, I gather information and then apply it in order to reach my goals.
What I’ve gathered so far, is that generally there seems to be a big correlation between worrying about moving a shitload of weight and constantly adding to weight the bar instead of worrying to much about form, and being fucking huge.
There also seems to be a correlation between being extremely concerned about form and disco-pump your way through endless sets with the 10lbs dumbbells, and generally looking like you don’t work out at all when wearing anything above size small.
I’ll stick with what has been proven to work.

Please don’t get mad if I correct you.
You are underestimating me waaay too much. I can imagine the readers of my posts imagining me as someone who looks like Richard Simmons who curls while standing at a bosu ball. Guys, please, I know I’m not elite but come on! Maraudermeat? Rowing twice as much as I squat? lol. That’s just bogus. Give me about 8-10 more years. After that, we’ll see who’s gonna be the one who’s mocking people about how weak they are…
I truly respect experienced lifters WITH THEIR EXPERIENCE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. It’s just that I don’t give a shit about their advice. If you read my earlier posts, you’ll notice how i gave MarauderMeat a compliment about how strong he is (he deserves it!!!). You’ll also notice how I bashed his advice for the OP. (he deserves it!!!)
Just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you’re privileged to teach pepople about what you’re doing. It’s called the law of individual differences. Kirk Karwoski and Leonid Taranenko are both legends in their respective sports, they are both very strong, and yet have done different training methods. If you were to ask the two for some advice about how to increase your squat, would they give you the same type of advice? FUCK NO!
And even if they themselves, who can squat more than Maraudermeat himself, gave me advice, I probably wouldn’t follow it unless if it is scientifically sound. FOR EXAMPLE, Kirk may tell me to squat 5 sets of 5 reps. My question is gonna be “why? Why do I have to do 5 reps? 5 sets of 4 reps is much closer to the recommended volume guideline of Alexander Sergeyevitch Prilepin’s table.”. He’d probably kick me out of the gym since I’m stubborn, and considered an idiot in T-Nation even though in reality, I know much more than all of you… My point is, just because a guy is strong doesn’t mean he’s smart. Bud Charniga probably can’t row as much as MarauderMeat, but he knows more about training than him… Heck, he probably knows more than Louie!

my form sucks ass and i’m giving crappy advice but yet, in your own words, i’m one of the strongest people… interesting. i wonder how i got that way?? this will be the one and only time that i will respond to your nonsense. i don’t believe in feeding into internet drama. i’m way to busy for that. the advice i give is real world tested. that means that i’ve used it and use it with the people that i coach. it sometimes flys in the face of so called experts. i’ll give my advice and stand behind my credentials and you can give your advice and stand behind yours. we can then let others decide who they want to listen to.
in my world, you haven’t even earned the right to give anyone advice. until you’ve actually done something significant in the world of lifting, then you are just another poser.
i don’t usually give unsolicited advice but i think you really need some- shut the fuck up, lift heavy shit, compete in something and then, and only then do you even come close to having the right to even have an opinion. i say this all the time- you don’t even know that you don’t know shit.
this is what is comical about the internet. you would NEVER in a million years walk up to me in the gym and tell me my form is crappy or that i’m giving out bad advice becuase you know that i would take your scrawny ass over my knee. you are one of the many boys that i see in the gym using your super strict rowing form with the pink dumbells. you are also the very same little trolls secretly envying how strong i am but then go on one of my youtube videos and trash me. then when i go to your videos, suprisingly you don’t have any.
I see this shit all the time and it ALWAYS holds true- those that trash others never succeed themselves. the true champions work hard, keep their heads down and worry about what they are doing. they don’t have time to post endless nonsense on the internet.
i’m putting out a plee to my fellow T-Nation brothers and sisters, PLEASE stop responding to this little boy. He seriously needs a ton more time to grow up before he has earned the right to be here. If he posts, for the love of God let it go. everytime i see his name it makes my eye twitch a little.
