Ankle Injury Prevention

I read where Mike Robertson uses pre-hab exercises for the ankle with his athletes. Does anyone have any experience using any of these exercises or have any examples??

Thanks,
GSUPike

Yeah do the exercises he outlined in his articles. Read everything he, Cressey, and Hartman have written, and everything else on this site for that matter. I have noticed a big difference since paying attention to ankle mobility. Use a tennis or lacrosse ball to roll the muscles of the lower leg and foot. Buy some Nike Frees too. good luck.

May sound crazy but way way back in the day LOL my first year of football several of us had ankle probs the coach had us walk on the sides of our feet as oftebn as we could until you were able to just stroll away on the outside of your foot if you wanted.

I used to have ankle probs all the time since then were talking 17+ years I havent had a prob at all

For what its worth

Ankle probelems arent nice. But prehab for them is pretty simple

  1. Look at your shoes - are they overly cushioned? have large heels (no jokes! LOL!) If so you may want to consider trying a flatter soled shoe.

  2. Try performing some exercises barefoot - great for proprioception, balance and mobility. I remeber in a seminar by Pavel that I attended he recommended barefoot hopping!

  3. Dumbell dorsiflexion exercses

  4. Inversion and eversion exercises. perform these using a rubber band / tubing. or a towel if you dont have a band etc. Place a towel on the floor flat. On the towel place a light object to weight it down.

Place your foot on the opposit end of the towel and, using only your foot, wrinkle the towel up by pulling it towards the midline of your boy. Perform the exercise the opposite way (away from the midline) too. If that doesnt make sense do a search for inversion and eversion exercise on google.

  1. Some instable exercises may be useful - wobble boards, BOSU (did I say that!!) etc
