5x5 w/Deads

Has anyone ever tried 5x5 B. Starrs program w/deads? I have done it with squats but tweaked my back so i am looking for away to work around it, and if anyone has tried it how were the results.

My deads are done on Wedneday. IMO you need to find a different program. Bill Starr’s whole mindset was geared toward the squats.

Plus, how can you DL if you can’t squat for back reasons?

I can’t answer that, it just does not bother me as much as the squats do. Appreciate the answer.

Bill Starr would never recommend practising deads on a weekly basis. He always believed that the deadlift was better improved by focussing on good mornings, high pulls and power shrugs since it is a maximal exertion lift. I think the stronglifts 5x5 included deads.

I do 3x6-8 deads so i guess 5x5 is ok but im no expert. Its working for me.

i’m doing this right now, with sumo deads instead of squats because i have no rack. it’s going very well, my latest 5x5 was with my 1RM from before i started the program. the other lifts are going well too!

also, a neat little surprise side-effect was how much my grip strength is improving with all of the DLs

No problem. Funny thing about the body huh? You’d think that deads would be out of the question.

Well you’re not totally screwed by any means.

You’d be fine if you could do your deads, maybe leg press and lunges afterward for the time being.

I’d still only DL once per week and maybe even alternate between conventional, sumo and stiff-legged versions ever few weeks until you get your back in order.

As much as I like the BS 5x5, it’s just not the same without squats.

If you have now rack and are looking for a good leg exercise, I would recommend snatch grip deadlifts over sumos.

Does your gym have a trap/hex bar?

If so, give it a try.

Bill stars program already has deads on the weds(maybe confusing with madcows) but yeh 5x5 works well my old 1 rep max is now my 5 rep max with an extra 10kg

Again thanks, we are only talking a few weeks, maybe not even that long, its just a tweak i hope!

I had the same thing happen yesterday. Tweaked my back doing squats and had to stop a set short of finishing, but then was able to rdls just fine right after. Different sort of loading on the back I am guessing.

Describe the pain and when it happened (in the ROM, top, mid, bottom etc.)

Why? Are you looking for someone who gives bad advice?

This has potential of Epic Fail.

If there is a suspected back injury, you must play it by ear.

I was out for a year following a disc injury from squats, ironically, in about the 14th week of Madcow 5x5 (an EXCELLENT program, btw).

Don’t be afraid to back off the weight tremendously and work back up. I started from BW squats and worked up with dumbbells (goblet squats), then 2 plate front and zercher squats before I ever put a bar on my back again. I’m about 30# away from a pre-injury PR after about 15 months, but I’ve been very conservative and the back is still tweaky.

Don’t just squat for squat’s sake-- you need your back.

so yeah my advice…squat the pain away…[/quote]

Question; How moronic is it to tell someone you’ve never met, with a back injury you cannot possibly diagnose, to keep doing the very thing that caused the injury in the first place?

Answer; Very!

Please stop posting about back rehab. PLEEEAAASE

And I should probably take back my earlier advice for the same reasons.

But as long as he knows his body, he can pull through this without our help.

No. someome very hot who loves to squat. Sounds like the perfect woman

Hopefully its nothing more than a muscle pull but i certainly felt it lowering myself, and struggled getting it back up, i think its like Raindrops said the difference being where the load was placed on me.

My next question would be why not the deads?
because of the stress it puts on the body?

I appreciate the common sense advice by the way.
