Your Death

No.

If you could know with certainty whether God was real or not would you want to know?

Whoa Testy, you need to make a new thread before asking questions like that.

this would be a no brainer yes for me, since I doubt one exists. It would be nice to know for certain and anyone that says they are certain is lying to you or themselves

No, because I’m shit out of luck either way. So I’d rather just go on feeling right about how I feel on the subject, and find out when the lights go out.

Yes, because even hide and seek has a use by date.

No. If I’m to die tonight in my sleep, I’d rather not know.

I will never die!

“Faith” by definition is not knowing with certainty.

I am not saying that you can’t believe with every fiber in your body, but it is impossible to “know” at this juncture. Even the absence of proof is faith to the atheist. I don’t see that you could ever prove that an all powerful god doesn’t or never existed, but faith doesn’t prove that he does exist either.

Faith, by its virtue, contains truths that only the believer would understand.

I never served in the military. I believe war exists (good or bad), but I would never try to have an argument about the experience of it with a veteran.

Sorry, I don’t believe this works, it is still just faith not an actual fact.

So if you were a believer but no longer are, can you still understand these “truths” that non believers can’t?

Let’s turn this around and back to the original question.

"If you could find out when and how you die, would you want to know? "
Where’s the certainty there? Where’s the facts that prove it?

Everyone here has answered this based on how it would affect their lives.

Faith is the same.

Faith is a strong belief in something regardless of tangible proof. This is why there are such great promises to believers because that loyalty is recognized since that person had “faith” even when there wasn’t anything to physically see. It requires no faith to believe in something that is right in front of you. Hence: Walk by faith and not by sight.

Debates on the subject could go on forever but we all have free will to choose to believe what we want.

Would I want to know when I was going to die? Nope. You should live each day like it were your last anyhow.

I already answered no to the original question. I think it would be a horrible thing to know, with consequences we may not even be able to fathom.

As far as the certainty in knowing, he didn’t suggest a method, just if you would want to know.

No trying to be difficult, but I don’t understand your “Faith is the same” statement. Could you please clarify? Faith is the same based on how it would effect your life?

No. He did ask how and when.

I meant, as many here would take that knowledge as truth, they answered accordingly (based on how it would affect their lives). Just as many take the tenets of their faith as knowledge, it subsequently affects their lives. We can’t know the how and when of our own demise. The question was posed based on faith that it was truth. You even answered it as such.

I appreciate the spirit behind this sentiment, and of course each day, each moment could very well be our last. However, any type of reasonable existence is based on the assumption that we will be around for a while.

Who honestly goes to work, takes out he garbage, pays their bills or watches what they eat and otherwise tends to those necessary but not-so-sexy details on their last day on earth?

I meant he didn’t state how you would come about this knowledge.

Thanks for the clarification.

I assumed the knowledge of your demise was a hypothetical, as your are correct it is not something you can know with certainty. Like the existence of God.
