Did you see Mike Tyson in his prime? He had great movement with his head and feet and tremendous hand speed. His footwork was phenomenal.

Against shitty fighters, yes. But his come-forward style would be tailor-made to any wrestler or takedown expert.
You guys are forgetting that the rule difference completely change teh style of fighting.

True, but I think the handspeed of a champion level boxer changes things as well. I don’t think most mma fighters would be able to get a punch in on a well executed shoot by a wrestler, but a top notch boxer may have the handspeed to actually catch them coming in, like i said even if he just grazed him with the punch coming in it would probably change the ability of the grappler to shoot in effectively. But a quick fighter with better foot work would definitely be better at defending against a take down. I’d love to see how well a good grappler would do trying to take down Mayweather. Can grapplers shooting speed beat the speed of lightning mayweather??
I’d fkn pay to watch that is all I’m saying. Plus Mayweather went to WWE and won, so he’s a legit wrestler now right?

this is kind of off topic, but i watched the bio of him a while back, and had forgotten how friggin’ fast and explosive he was. it pisses me off when i hear RJJ talk how Tyson was never actually a good boxer, even though he was almost always a lot smaller than his opponet, and far less experienced.
The problem with this thread is that by the time a Championship Boxer IS a Championship Boxer he doesn’t have much of a window to train and get good enough on the ground to do anything in MMA. By the time he trains up on his MMA game he’s old!
Keep in mind too that Boxing striking is not like MMA striking. In Boxing you don’t have to worry about take downs or leg kicks.
As has been mentioned before K-1 fighters would bring the BEST striking game into MMA and they have not done well even after training for MMA. The best MMA guys have been former top class wrestlers. These guys you see striking a lot and winning the MMA do this because they are so good on the ground or their defense is good enough.
Who’s the most known striker in the UFC over the last 4-5 years? Probably Chuck Liddell…even though he’s toward the end of his career. Guess what? He’s a former D1 wrestler.
Couture? THE BEST HANDS DOWN GRAPPLER THE UFC HAS EVER SEEN. He was an Olympic alternate.
Anderson Silva? Black Belt BBJ. Black Belt Judo. Black Belt TKD.
Tim Sylvia? Not very good. Wins/won because he’s like 8 feet tall with 20 foot arms!..

Art Jimmerson? He was a ranked boxer.
Marcus Davis was too, correct?
He was a boxer but was far from being ranked. These next few months should give a glimpse of how some boxers would fare. Toney is supposedly fighting Couture and Mayorga is fighting Din Thomas. These two are far from being good representatives for boxing, with Toney’s gut and Mayorga’s smoking habit.

Not all champion level boxers are old mid twenties isn’t a terribly late start for MMA.

Toney fighting Couture? Feeding the poor man to the sharks there. But hey, it’s not like the guy’s looking for anything but the payday, heheh.
Back when Floyd Jr. was running his mouth off, I liked the idea of Kermit Cintron fighting MMA. At least in theory. A guy who has a strong amateur wrestling background, is big for 155, athletic, world-class boxer with devastating power. It would take time to integrate the two and learn kick and ground/submission defense but a guy like that would be intriuging. He seems to be somewhat missing the strong mental aspect of it though.
Problem is why would any top level boxer WANT to compete in MMA? Regardless of the popularity boom of MMA, there is still waaaayyyyy waay way more money in boxing, and at the end of the day, that’s what counts to a fighter.
Best we can realistically hope for is the generation of fighters that will grow up with MMA. I’m actually excited to see what the future brings, it will be insane when we start seeing the prospects that have been training MMA since 6 years old.

i wouldn’t be too surprised if toney killed couture in the first 15 seconds. couture got dropped 3 times by nogeuira
Could happen but Nog is well rounded Toney’s not. Either Randy gets clipped (unlikely) or Randy takes him down and proceeds to punch or submit him. (most likely outcome)
What is that talk about Tyson? If Tyson were to do MMA realize he would be shorter in the heavyweight division which would make it harder to take him down cause he would already be low…and if your getting that close that would enable his fast footwork and you’d get some good hooks/uppercuts in and possibly be KO’ed.
Realize Tyson always had power in his hands.
Aside from that yes the UFC does have not the best hands in the business but it’s true the guys who have a big background in wrestling/bjj whatever do very well in MMA cause if they know they are fighting a guy with very good stand up they will take them down to their world, even if the boxer/great stand up guy has trained some groundfighting it will not be the same.
Bas Rutten lost to submisison and got so mad he said he would never lose again, so since his standup was already great he trained the ground game 2 sometimes 3 times a day and won his next 8 fights by submission. Anything is possible, just work hard dammnit!
