Suggestions? What do you think is the best first book, foundational
“Arnold’s Modern Bodybuilding Encyclopedia” contains a ton of great pictures demonstrating exercises as well as routines and insight from a great champion. I think that would be a great starting point and could help him build a great, well-rounded base. “The Golden Six” is definitely a good beginner program.
I’d second this. You can debate newer methods and science, but this is a solid place to start. I like that it’s not just a workout program book, it talks about mindsets, bodybuilding culture, gym equipment, etc.
What is the training goal for this teenage son?
That’s exactly what I was thinking. It covers so much of lifting and the history and culture around it, it’s just a great piece of educational material.
The New Rules of Lifting by Cosgrove.
I third this! One of my first training books…
Did your son ask for the book, or are you telling him to read one before training?
Reason I ask is (from experience as an S&C coach) most teenagers trust 20-year-olds on TikTok more than any coach or writer
He’s a skinny athlete. Plays all sports at a high level but wants to add muscle
Unfortunately you are correct
Appreciate the replies
Are you wanting a book that teaches him lifting technique as well, or just programming and nutrition?
