Recommended Books

I’ve just finished Scrawny to Brawny by Mike Meija and John Berardi, am now completely addicted to lifting, and am hungry to learn more.

As a skinny newbie I am interested to know what books you would recommend in general and particularly those focused on hypertrophy.

I would recommend the whole series of books by Stuart McRobert but more particularly his books Brawn and the follow up called Beyond Brawn.

They are great books tht focus on truth and dispells a lot of rumors known to beginners! I wish I had known about his books from the start!!

Also, you should stay away from the magazines as they are full of deceit and they mostly promote and sell products that the steroid junkies endorse and “allegedly” use!

Buy Christian Thibaudeau’s book " The Black Book of Training Secrets ". You will become exposed to different types of training and the more your re-read the better grasp you will have. Also you’ll be able to understand his articles on T-Nation more effectively.

I like brawn, I’d skip out on Arnolds book or periodization stuff. The Arnold book is stuff you can find on the internet pretty easily as far as the info goes and anything on periodization is dumb for beginners and also I find it kind of inapplicable.

I tried it, I’ve stuck with Brawn, and sold the other two.

Rippetoe’s Starting Strength is great for really learning technique, and not too expensive compared to a lot of ebooks out there.

I like “Starting Strength” by Rippetoe. I like “weightlifting encyclopedia” by Arthur Dreschler–probably the greatest single overview of olympic lifting and technique there is. I love "Science of Sports Training by Thomas Kurz. That book is awesome. Some of the nutritional data is out dated and some of the training info has changed, but make no mistake–everything training related works well still today. Fantastic book.

sorry if it was already mentioned, but ‘Muscle’ by Ian King has been utterly essential for me so far… really recommend it as far as information goes…

the routines offered in the book are too involved for me working out at home (which is a shame cos the routines are covered in detail…)!
