Wild Salmon?

Great interview with Dr. Kinakin this week, but how do I know if my fish oil caps use wild salmon? My bottle just says “fish”. Anyone know what fish is used in most cheaper fish oil capsules?

Alot of times fish oils are cod liver oil. Good, but not as good as salmon oil for changing the cell membrane and lowering the resting potential of the pain nerve fibers so you experience less pain.

I’ve just been using Kirkland’s brand of Fish Oil Concentrate and after reading your interview I’m worried that this might be a poor choice. I only buy it because it is dirt cheap at CostCo. I get 300 softgels for $8. Do you know if this brand is good or not?

let’s say all I can afford is the Sams Club fish oil, am I doing more harm than good, how do I know if they are full of mercury? I can’t afford to use the Sears brand in appreciable dose so should I just skip the cheap ones?

Dr. Kinakin, just wondering how well herring oil stacks up, if you have the time, thanks!

I heard Kirkland isn’t too bad either. check out www.mercola.com for more info on that.
Herring is also a good choice. Best is salmon though.

What about trader joes wild alaskan canned salmon?

Check this out for a good price on wild salmon oil high quality too.

No one ever really answered the question about Sam’s club members mark fish oil caps. Thia is about all most of us can afford. Are they good or not? Also should I drop creatine, surge,MRP’s,etc. so I can afford better fish oil?

Thanks for that link. Those prices are unbelievable!

Note to everyone who thinks that they can’t afford fish oil caps: You’re wrong. Check it out.

The Kirkland brand is good from what I’ve read. It can be purchased through CostC for $8 for 300 softgels. Just use that if you’re worried about your Sam Club brand. I read that a way to test if the fish oil is rancid or not is to smell the oil in capsule after puncturing it. I tried this with my Kirklands and it wasn’t fishy so it must be fresh.

Are the salmon fish oil caps a GNC wild salmon?

If I’m not mistaken, most salmmon oil comes from pink or “chum salmon”, which is not farmed as they are abundant in the wild. These are also the fish used for canning, and the oil is a product of this process. Farmed salmon are the atlantic salmon, which are used for filets or steaks.

Natural Factors makes a good Wild Salmon Oil Capsule Formula. It’s pretty cheap too. I think you can buy 180 1000 mg capsules for something like $14. Check it out.

I thought you might like this study showing how fish oils decrease the incidence of sudden cardiac death, which could interfere with your training.

Chris, this is one of the studies that I was talking about how fish oils decrease the resting potential of the nervous system so it takes more to experience pain. That is how fish oils decrease pain, and also stabilize the heart rhythms.

Study:

Early Protection Against Sudden Death by n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids After Myocardial Infarction

Circulation. 2002;105: 1897-1903. (April 23, 2002)

Background Our purpose was to assess the time course of the benefit of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on mortality documented by the GISSI-Prevenzione trial in patients surviving a recent (<3 months) myocardial infarction.

Conclusions The early effect of low-dose (1 g/d) n-3 PUFAs on total mortality and sudden death supports the hypothesis of an antiarrhythmic effect.

“According to the results of electrophysiological studies, n-3 PUFAs seem to modulate ion currents (primarily of Na+ and Ca++) in the myocyte sarcolemma, shifting the steady-state inactivation potential to more negative values, increasing the depolarizing current necessary to elicit an action potential by approximately 50% and prolong the refractory period by about 3-fold.” [Lowers the resting threshold so that the heart is more stable against trivial excitation depolarization or arrhythmic dysfunction].

The evidence presented is that n-3 PUFAs stabilized cardiac
electrical depolarization by lowering the resting electrical threshold.
[A similar explaination is used with respects to the nociceptive
afferent system and the reduction of pain perception].

There was a 41% relative risk reduction of total mortality observed
after 3 months of treatment with n-3 PUFAs.

Uh, I see that it’s wild salmon oil, and it’s 1000mg… but 1000mg of what, exactly? How much of the good stuff is actually in there? I read the description, and I couldn’t find it in there. Maybe I’m just blind.

I was wondering how much EPA/DHA was in there too, because it looks like a really good deal. Any insights?

I’ve emailed the people at ourhealthcorp.com, but have got no response. I don’t remember if they had a phone number, but I’ll call tomorrow if they have one and have not emailed me back.

If anybody finds out how much EPA/DHA there is per cap, I'm sure that we would all like to hear.

Each capsule is 500mg, consisting of 90mg of EPA and 60mg of DHA. I thought Puritan’s Pride had inexpensive salmon oil capsules, but these are even cheaper.

That’s a lot of capsules. If we’re supposed to be getting 6g per day of EPA/DHA, then you’re talking 40 caps per day. I wouldn’t want to burp after that…
