Why Lift?

I dont remember seeing any athlete of professional caliber that doesn’t incorporate some sort of weight program…hockey, basketball, football…etc.

Why do some people feel the need to come to a “bodybuilding think tank” and then continue to berate bodybuilding? I dont understand your motives, but your’re an idiot.

Some of the greatest hockey players of all time didn’t lift…Rocket Richard, Gretzky, #4 Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe etc etc

Specifically Gretzky. Do you think any of the stronger, weight trained modern hockey players are going to ever have 3 sonsecutive 200+ point seasons?? Nope.

Larry Bird, Kareem, McHale, Walton, West, Chamberlain…yeah they sucked. Too bad they didn’t lift weights so they could have been half descent.

Who’s the idiot now?

I bet the guy(s) protecting Gretzky lifted weights.

Go to the gym. Run around with your knees together while flailing your arms over your head yelling “o.k. you sthupid weight lifters…leths all go outside for sthom cardio”.

After you’ve had your no-load ass kicked you may come back to the thread and tell us why you have decided to start lifting.

Easy now. At 180lbs I could kick any 220 pound weightlifter with no fighting back-ground. No trying to sound tough but you are the one that starting equating lifting weights to fighting ability.
Well…you’ve certainly got the Go-rilla worried. Man! you must be one bad dude! Bet your all functional and stuff huh…

o’brother…not another one…

the toughest guys on the planet are all on internet chat rooms…
DPH this guys probably really, really serious. I may need to put my Sainted Mother on his ass. She’s not anywhere near 180 but she has plenty of “fighting” experience. During my mis-spent youth she beat my ass on a regular basis.

Do you even know who that is? One of the toughest men on the planet. His nickname is The Axe Murderer. He’s more dangerous with his fists then most men would be with an axe. But I guess I am a loser, I should instead aspire to be like a workboot-spandex-sunglass-wearing-pussy bodybuilder…IDIOT!!!

Go watch a video of Ross Enamait and tell me bodyweight exercises are useless.

Personally, I’m going to restrict my weight training to:
overhead squats (the king of exercises, thank you Dan John)
weighted pullups
weighted dips
overhead presses
snatch grip deadlifts

Speaking of Ross, he’s coming out with a new book soon called ‘Never Gymless’.

P.S. If someone knows how to perform this feat, let me know how to train for it: http://www.thehappybody.com/Video/PostureTest.wmv

So then, given your analogy, this guy could easily kick all of our asses, even yours?

Functional…

LOL. That is me!!

Seriously though, 180lb trained amateur fighter would murder a 220lb untrained weightlifter even if the guy could out lift him big time.

How about 200lb Chuck Liddell vs 290lb Dave Tate or a 350lb WSM competitor?? NO FUCKING CONTEST!!

I am not tough and don’t claim to be. However, a lot of teenagers on this sight seem to thing lifting weights makes you tough and able to fight…IT DOES NOT…AT ALL!!

LMAO!!

You say that you weigh 180 pounds. Are you a worse fighter than you were at 160? Would be you less able to fight if you added 20 pounds of muscle while maintaining the rest of your training?

For fuck’s sake, are we back on this argument again? This is nearly as retarded as the Bruce Lee threads that pop up here and there.

This guy who is world champion at ass whooping would beat a heavier guy if that heavier guy had no fight training? Fucking, really?!?!? Who would have thought that?

This argument is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. The English language doesn’t contain words to describe how fucking dumb this argument is.

Yeah I agree but these arguments usually start with some stupid fuck saying something like “Yeah, well take your 180lbs of ‘functional’ strength down to the gym where a 220lb weight lifter will kick the shit out of you.” I mean come on. That IS retarded!!

I’ll give you this - you do an excellent Kellen Winslow II impression. I think you must have stuck a few wheels of cheddar on the bar with your last bench press, your post was so full of cheese, but props on selling it with such vigor.

No. I’m about 190 right now. But I was a much better fighter at 180 than I was at 160lbs but also much better than I was at 200lbs.

I guess 180 is about my ideal fighting weight. I’m strong, fit, fast and agile at that weight. ANy heavier and I become slower and just too big to perform optimally at athletics. Less than 180 and I become too weak and light to perform optimally. Most BB’s and hardcore weight lifters are just too big. They are good at lifting heavy barbells…THAT’S IT.

I think everyone has an ideal weight. Whether you are under or over that weight, both are equally detrimental to athletic performance.

I’d rather fight, play a sport against or compete at pretty much anything against someone my height that was 220 or 150. Either/or, I’d have them both whipped for different reasons.

Listen little guy…don’t get your panties in a wad. You just need to understand that your probably not as bad as you think you are. There are lots of bad guys out there. Heck…I’d imagine that there are a few on this thread that were fighting little cunts like you long before you new how to ask your mother for permission to get on the net.

LOL!!!

modern tennis player are bigger, stronger, and faster (thanks to time spent in the gym) now than tennis players in the 50’s…are you saying that tennis players in the 50’s would stomp all over a moder tennis great?

modern running backs in the NFL are bigger, stronger, and faster (thanks to time spent in the gym) than running backs were in the 50’s…are you saying that a modern NFL running back great couldn’t be a great running back in the 50’s?
This is why you cannot even compare the players from back then. I mean, look at the sizes that they were, especially in the running back department, or linebacker. These guys are 20 pounds heavier now, run faster, and are far more solid than they ever were before.

All because of weight training and improved strength, conditioning, and nutrition.

I hate to bust anyone’s bubble… but Gretzky did weight training. No, not hardcore stuff, but they did stick his ass in the gym and get him some basic training to help flesh him out, since they didn’t want their star player turned into a broken pile of bones the first time some goonsquad enforcer ran into him.

Now I’m trying to remember who his “bodyguard” was… A lot of the Oilers were fond of Gretzky, and not just because he was their golden boy. He’s just so damned nice that people love him. There was one brute on the Oilers who, if you so much as winded Gretzky, you knew that psycho was going to be feeding you the ice in the next shift or two. Fearsome. Wish I could remember his name…

No doubt. I don’t think I’m bad. I’m just saying lifting weights doesn’t make you a tough guy by any means.
