An interesting note about olympic weightlifting not requiring much speed. There was a study done some years ago (I know some have claimed that it was bullshit, but I’ve personally never seen any definitive proof that it didn’t happen) where they took athletes from many different sports and tested their performance in several tests (40m dash, vertical leap, etc…).

I meant it to read that they excelled in the positions in football that didn’t require much speed (a lot of the offensive line, a passing-dominant quarterback, that kind of shit). I wanted to limit that comment only to football. Olympic weightlifting does require the competitor to create a tremendous amount of velocity onto the bar. I read the same article you did. Olympic Weightlifters did better on the combine style vertical jump test than any other Olympic athletes and had faster 20-Yard Dash Times than anyone else. But Olympic Weightlifters are gifted lifters because they have, among other gifts, the ability to put a lot of velocity on a barbell. I’m realizing I feel kind of stupid trying to defend myself at this point about all this because I really do believe that judging sport specific athletic potential by race is just stupid. All I want to really get across is that white guys who play Pro Football are usually the guys who don’t need to do a lot of running and that Olympic Lifters can jump really high because they’ve trained all their lives to jump a barbell - not because they have good genes for it. In fact, a good Olympic lifter who would have long arms short legs would probably have bad natural levers for being good at the vertical jump.
