i am having a hard time figuring wheteher i should use the standard Westside template/split, or should use Joe DeFranco’s Westside for Skinny Bastards spli, modified from the original Westside. any opinions??
Yes, having started with the original Westside and screaming when the long division and the calculations of percentages got the best of me, I decided to modify the program to suit me. What I’ve realized since is that neither Louie, nor Dave were to blame for the confusion. They WANT you to think for yourself. Some of the Westside programs you may read about are waaay advanced both in construction and execution. Not to mention probably too high a volume for “regular” guys. I absolutely suggest that you at least start with Joe DeFrancos’ “Skinny Bastard” program. And by the way, don’t let the title mislead you. I am 6-2" and 260 lbs and this skinny bastard program works wonders for me.
I totally agree. I feel that the Westside Template is just a base that each individual should mold for his or her needs. If you are not as experienced I would definately reccomend more of a “Westside for Skinny Bastards” workout.
don’t make more out of it then there really is. Westsides program is not confusing or hard. it is quite simple to understand:
on monday pick a squat or dead variation and work up to a triple or single. then do a couple supplementary exercises for hams/posterior chain and abs. on wed pick a bench variation and work up to a triple or single. supplementary exercises for tris, lats, shoulders. friday 8-12 sets of 2 reps in hte box squat, every now and then when you feel good, take a heavy double or single. supplementary exercises in the same manner as the monday workout. sunday 8 sets of 3 reps in the bench using three differentgrips inside the rings. every now and then when you feel good, take a heavy single. supplementary exercises like you did on wednesdays workout. on fri and sun you are using 50-60% of your 1RM (approx.) for box squats go in a 3 week wave 50%, 55%, 60%. For bench find a weight 50-60% and stay at that percentage all the time. on the DE days, bar speed rules so adjust %'s accordingly.
It really isn’t that difficult. What is difficult is the blood and guts you have to put into the workout to get strong.
It’s not rocket science dude, just a great training program.

First, what are your goals?
And I agree with Scott613, a lot of people over-analyze Westside. It is not that complicated at all.

Work out your squat, bench and deadlift maxes. Just start the program and work out your maxes from there. So whatever you manage in the first week, count as your maxes and go from there.
