Day C+10

Sheesh, 10 days into this. The whole world is pretty quiet on a Sunday in the middle of a pandemic. There are a few live people sorta strolling about the condo complex here. Sun is out…a bit cold, but inviting for a bit of outside time.

No training today. I am finding that, even with absolutely no goddamned equipment of note, I am still able to be training pretty hard (there’s a lesson in this I can’t help but notice), so a rest day is in order. No Bob, either.

I decided to take a quick trip down into the little town center that has a few open stores. Took my el-scooter instead of the car, because my aim was just to the be outside for a bit. The 4 small stores were all open, and not appearing busy at all. I decided to go into one…didn’t really need to as such, but there were a few things I wanted and had told myself I would get if the places were not crowded.

The store was absolutely fully stocked, even over-stocked. Not that many people, fewer than normal on a Sunday afternoon I would say. Disinfectant dispensers installed here and there. Spacers on the floor when standing in line. I think Denmark is in a post-panic phase now, so hopefully that’s what will happen in other places in the world where it is currently still chaos. All assuming that the worst-case scenario doesn’t come to fruition.

Things aren’t too bad here in the UK, gutted pubs are shut. I’ll either have to work more hours or spend more time with my family.

Do those elbow sleeves help? My elbows are starting to get a little grouchy, even with body weight stuff (perhaps I should focus on the body weight side of that equation, so a push-up is not a max effort lift, but let’s get real).

I want to say they help a little. Or maybe they help sometimes. My left elbow in particular gives me trouble frequently, and I think it is actually bodyweight stuff that seems to make it worse (lots of torque in some of those moves). Anyway, their primary job is to keep things warm, and I feel they do a pretty good job of that.

Perfect - thanks. I wear knee sleeves exactly for the warmth and I do think they help.

Time to support someone’s business again with some elbow sleeves. I’m basically a hero.

It seems that they’re not certain if you can catch the virus twice. I’m wondering if it could come back around if we don’t find a vaccine or cure. The model I saw thinks it could still blow up here if we go back to normal after a couple months of taking precautions. I got the impression that we have to follow this course until we find a solution…or all catch it and survive.

Damn right my man!

You seem to have changed tune a little over the last week on this? Anyway, I think it is still possible for it to come back around even if it mostly cannot get caught twice. We won’t all get it the first time around (that is indeed the entire point of this social distancing), so what happens if we stop taking precautions……

I don’t know. In any event, we are all forced to tag along for the ride and see where it leads us.

I believe we’re modeling it very similarly to an influenza, so there will be a return.

There are pretty promising treatment options in trial now.

I think we’ll see vaccines in trial second half of this year with a potential availability of mid-next year.

You should also see some level of herd immunity for next season - making this the year to get ahead, which is where we’re basing all our restrictions.

I’m trying to absorb the magnitude of this. It’s hard to believe. I’m slowly accepting it but I still have a bit of skepticism.

Regardless of how I feel about things, the damage to our economy is going to happen. I guess I’m choosing to believe this is as bad as they’re saying but hoping they’re wrong and this fizzles out.

That’s not too far from my own feelings on the matter…I suppose I am just ā€œaheadā€ of you in terms of time, which is one of the very strange traits of this pandemic. Everything you are seeing is a result of what happened (or didn’t happen) two to three weeks ago, and those places that still haven’t instituted the lockdown procedures have simply failed to learn the lesson (as most countries seem to have failed). I have basically been in lockdown for 10 days now. And so far, only China and SK have gotten ahead of it, it is turning to absolute shit everywhere else. Until that changes, I will remain worried. Not for myself as such, but for the economy, and ultimately for those who have to suffer through it.

This feels like a pretty accurate representation of my thoughts on it.

Yeah, it’s almost as if every government was in denial that it could happen in their country. Then it did

Like every country thought ā€œif we advise people to do it, they’ll definitely listenā€. Then ā€œwhat the fuck are you guys doing?ā€.

Yes, and it is still happening just like that in all the places where they have not declared a lockdown UK and Aussie came a bit late to the party, their infection curves are currently among the worst. Same can be said of a number of individual states in the US. Florida is going to be a disaster.

Won’t be long over here I don’t think. I know a few NHS workers and at the minute they’re holding their heads in their hands at how fucking stupid the public are. They’re risking their lives, we just have to stay home and watch Netflix and we can’t even do that. And that’s not mentioning the supplies being stolen etc.

Well, yes, Florida is a disaster in the general sense of the word. But it is in this case a very special combination of a lot of people acting very irresponsibly, combined with a helluva lot of old people.
