Weighted Dips?

For anyone that does them do you load up with plates or a dumbbell?

Think there’s any difference?

Mark

DB’s are definitely more comfortable for me. Plus, it’s easier to load an 90 DB than a couple of 45pd plates.

I use plates with the belt. I don’t see how there would be any difference.

Just a matter of preference.

Killer exercise!

I have to hold a dumbell inbetween my feet, my gym doesn’t have a special belt with a chain. Big pain with a 45lb dumbell…

There’s a thread about this already, about two weeks ago. Same info plus a good video link. (25lb plate plus chains) Use the search engine.

For dips, John Roman loads up on babies while wearing his ninja outfit (his work uniform) which is totally sweet. Donkey calf raises are a whole nother story though, which is awesome.

Thanks for the link Billy.

Couldn’t get the avi to load though.

I had been doing dips with plates but started getting up towards using two plates so I just switched to dumbbells.

Just thought I’d see what everyone else does

I’ve always put plates in a backpack…but then I don’t load with a tremendou amount.

i’ve done both, and with a db inbetween my feet i feel i concentrate more, like im tighter, as opposed to a plate hangin from a belt.
maybe its just me

I have a chain with clips at the end attached to my weight belt to do weighted dips. There would be no way I could use a dumbbell with that. And there’s no way I could hold that much weight with my feet/legs. So, it’s plates for me.

You can place dumbbells in the knee pits and curve up your lower leg to hold them in place.

Gets a bit tough if you have lots of weight, and I prefer dumbbells with a more worn grip, the rough cross cut metal doesnt feel good on the inner leg.

I use the belt with chain and plates. I find that I can’t hold large DB with my legs for many reps. With the plates I can concentrate on the movement, not holding the DB.

If you’re doing a “drop set” then dumbells is the only way to go – dip with the weight until you stall, then immediately drop the weight and force out another rep or two.

But I use a standard dip belt and plates. Anything over 30 lbs, and the belt is the only way to go.

I just hold the plates with my inter-nut muscles between my legs.

I like dumbells. Once you get over 100 pounds on the belt, different sized plates are just too hard to get on and off the belt.

The thing I hate most, though, is when the chain is not long enough. It’s easy to load it up with a long chain, but with a short one the plates/dumbell is right against my nuts. Have to be very careful.

I stand the plates on their edges and squat down a little to get the chain through. Of course, I’m pretty short!

personally makes no difference, they are both a pain in the ass once you pass 100lbs, either way thats alot of metal between your legs…

I’m with everyone else…doesn’t really make a difference. 75 lbs is 75 lbs. All depends on preference. I prefer the DB’s as it is MUCH easier to load a DB than it is to load several plates
