Weighted Dips, Popular?

Hi! New to this forum, thought I would post a video, 4x60kg/132lbs at 75kg/165lbs.

Been off these for a while since a got my own gym, but I miss the diprack.

Are you guys doing them?

Think it depends pretty much on whether someone’s shoulders can take them or not.

Very strong, especially at such a low bodyweight, good job!

I used to get pain from doing them, but gave them a shot a month ago and loved them, with no pain. I figured I got strong enough to deal with them. I am now up to:
12 X bodyweight (215 dressed)
10 x bodyweight + 45
8 x bodyweight + 70
8 x bodyweight + 70

Usually the first one or two will feel weird but once I get in the groove it’s gone.

I’m hoping these dips will help increase my bench strength, and so far it has.

Tonight I’m gonna try to get a few with 90 lbs added on.

I do 'em! Those look like very nice dip bars… sturdy and plenty of space.

They’re a staple in my routine. Awesome lift.

i love that dip stand, my gym back home has one. I tend to shy away from doing weighted dips on the power towers in most gyms because I don’t like the hand placement, but with those you can choose and it is much more comfortable.

i used to absolutely hate dips. they’d always hurt my shoulders, were uncomfortable yadah yadah yadah… then when i moved away from home and tried out a different gym they had dip bars that were set up a lot narrower. i gave them a shot and realized that the discomfort was due to the wide positioning of the handles at the gym i had always gone to. still, wasn’t a huge fan of them.

over the last year or so i’ve forced myself to do dips and frequently too. i’m up to about bw + 65lbs for 3 sets of 8 (i weigh about 150 or so). nothin’ crazy but i definitely want to get up to a couple plates before i’m anywhere near satisfied. after forcing myself to do dips for a while, i absolutely love them, and it blows that i never did these before because of an ill-equipped gym.

I completely understand this. Another reason dips used to hurt me was they were too wide and the handles sucked. The university gym I’m at during the school year has these great rubber-handled, width adjustable handles.

Yeah, I’m probably capable of doing around 7-8 reps at the same weight, but since it was about a month since a did them i’ve lost a bit of “technique”. Did 10x50kg/110lbs last time wich was a PR. Will probably post more videos, you guys feel free to post any dips videos too!

About four months ago, my temporary PR at that weight. A bit different technique there.

Is that you in the video?

Edit: I see your weight in your profile is 165 so I’m guessing that is you.

Good strength! I’ll try to have a friend record me tonight.

Sounds good, how did your warmup look like?

I lift with some of the strongest guys in the world and I’ve never seen them doing dips. That’s not to say that it’s a bad exercise but I think there are exercises that have more carryover to the bench press and are less stressfull on the shoulder. I used to do weighted dips but I got to a point where my shoulders couldn’t take it anymore.

I haven’t done them since and my bench has improved considerably. Those dips you were doing were impressive but we don’t compete in dips we compete in the squat, bench, and deadlift. For my time I go with bands, boards, chains, and even dumbells from time to time.

Well I did these after Flat BB Bench and Incline dumbbells but for the dip set it was:
12x bodyweight
10x 45
8x 70
2x 90

It was heavy lol.

Ok, I usually don’t go over 5 reps with weight except for the last set, and about 2-3x10 with BW only. Works pretty fine!

Of course, if their three lifts going up anyway there are no reason to increase the risk of an injury, but I think some people don’t even give them a shot. The people i’ve seen do dips is often benchers, and benchers only.

Started doing dips again after i was limited with pressing movements due to my shoulder, and they actually feel good on my shoudler so im keeping them, im at 250-260 bw right now and have gotten to three sets of 10, plan on addding weight next week, well see how it goes
